Was thinking about that and figured the contest rocks would have to go to someone in Cali where a few/several members here could be judges. Thinking that's the only place where multiple members are in "close" proximity. Details such as that could be worked out. Just think it would give the forum never before seen exposure. People think I am wierd because I don't have a box to think inside or outside of. Perhaps wampidytoo and I are brothers from different mother's. ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) Anyways, I suggest judges do not have to be members. But instead. They must be lapidaries! So, the entrants for the month are sent to some trusted member who goes to a club. Then at the meeting has the members judge blind. They have no clue who we are. This accomplishes two things. Gets the tumbles judged. And so generates interest at the club level. Last, I offer that all entries for a given month be auctioned off to help Tommy with monthly expenses. @shotgunner wishes he had thought of this a year ago.

I could fill about 20-30 MFRB's <half-full> of coral chips. Someone or each of you pay me $15/MFRB for shipping. Will that do a contest ? 30 boxes = $450 in shipping, so I would prefer to have some reimbursement for just the shipping.
I would pile then all together and mix them up and then divide totally random.
I would think a half MFRB could last 2-3 contests. The coral is really consistent in hardness and lacks fractures. Reliable tumbling rock, indestructible. Perhaps three contests, he whom wins the most contests AND best tumbles. A tumble-off-play-off arrangement of whatever arrangement.
I need to do it in the next 2-3 weeks before my work season hits.
I was getting ready to send out 5-6 <full> MFRB's for $30. If those 5-6 don't mind I can do 1/2 boxes for $15.
Let me know. I have tumbled these varieties of coral already. Getting repetitive for me. I am going to collect new colors this year. That's what I do. And yes, I have picked through a lot of it and tumbled some of the trophies. But am in process of heat treating a large portion of them as I type. New colors to mix in.
Maybe Scott can give me a list of contestants and their addresses to make shipping duties easier on me. How many @shotgunner ? Like 17-20 ? That would take little effort. If it is less than 20 I could probably fatten the boxes.
I would be mixing some partially tumbled rock in the batch. Used as media for tumbling metal parts in my biz.

I don't know where my list of addresses went. SFRB is what I sent. I believe the world contest too. MFRB is a large unit for the 3# rotary people. jamespYes 18 I think.

Cancel Red Alert What rocks didya find on your trip to the mountains Jim? Off to find a trip report... I took photos. Took a jeep trail using Honda Civic up to 3750 ft on Springer Mountain. Hit clouds at ~2500 ft. They are being flickrfied as we type. Lots of photos of old Appalachia, friend's cabin is in one of the most desolate and rugged areas of Georgia mountain territory. Lots of old families and original cabins. Still puzzled at the sight in the local barbecue spot. rocks sucked.

if contest is cancelled I will go back to sending full MFRB's to those that are on the list for $30. The coral is a good one to tumble.

I don't know that there was a contest to cancel. Maybe I missed something and/or my memory ain't all that.
I believe the discussion was about holding future (open to all, not just folks here) contests to draw interest and new folks to the forum once Tommy takes over. Kind of strategizing down the road ideas.
Sorry the rocks weren't good. Looking forward to trip pics.
flickrfied - is that like photobucketed but different?

I was just suggesting that we could get our material from members. I also think that the person supplying should be paid for the material, time, and effort. I think it would be nice to tumble different members collected material but it would be a lot of work for that member and they should be compensated. I also don't think it should be more then 2-3 times a year because of the cost and time commitment to those doing the tumbling. Some may want to do it more times a year but I think the goal should be get as many interested as we can. If it runs all the time I think many would get burned out.............................MrP

The coral is available if needed in the next few weeks. Y'all 's call. I understood your point Michael. Members could get involved in a sale and win-win happens. I just have a lot of coral to share at this time and was offering it el cheapo.

Just a thought Jim - IF it is decided to do one of those open to the public contests AND your coral is chosen as the rock to tumble in a contest - you could break it down to tumbling sizes (as you have the experience and could probably do it faster/better than anyone else here) then you ship it in bulk (large FR boxes?) to whoever is running the contest and they could ship it to individual folks entering the contest.

Just some ideas if this does gain traction....We don't necessarily need to mirror what they do for their contest. We could change things up and do something like, 3 lbs of material in a SFRB, 1 lb each of material of varying difficulties. For example, 1 pound each:
Easy - AZ Petwood, coral? Medium - Mahogany obsidian, banded amethyst Difficult - Rhyolite, apatite, something softer
Overall score based on aggregate score of the 3 materials.

It is all done and ready to tumble. I am just heat treating about half of it. And yes, I would prefer to ship it to the distributor. Just saying, I have a lot of it prepped and am ready to move it out so I can collect different coral from the wild. Like enough to ship 20-30 MFRB's say at least 1/2 full. If, some one/any one wants to use it in a tumbling contest.

I am all for having a go at whatever contest is going. Just remember running one will be a lot of work. I know his as I am the president of our local club and any competition is a lot of work if it is going to be rigorously run. I like the idea of a forum contest run once a year with a single material. Just my thoughts. Will be in... but just remember I live a little bit of a distance away compared with most members so getting material to me and then getting it back takes a while.
Here's a thought maybe the previous year’s winner gets to choose the next years material....
Cheers Scott

My status of the 2017 world contest is that everything is mostly still in the rough grit. I have pulled a couple out to go on to finer grit, but that includes some had rotten spots open up. Before I began tumbling I did try to split all of the rocks with bad spots with a cold chisel set in the bad areas and split along those lines, but it did not keep new ones from showing up later. Since the rules said imperfections in the rocks would not count against me, I figure I will be shipping some of those rocks back to them in the end.
