I just use a dish towel around the knob when tightening. Allows me to get a good grip. Guess it works for me, never had a rock come loose and I cut quite a few roundish rocks. Wouldn't want to deal with that round knob if I had arthritis or such, would have to come up with a tool to give better leverage in that case. johnjsgems , one of the selling points, for me, was the front to back vise as opposed to the top/bottom vise on other brands. Saw is a work horse and one of my best lapidary equipment purchases. The vise on the "wrong" side of the blade was not an issue. Would like to hear more about your experience & usage of the above rock clamps Azrockgeek

I've never seen one of the new HP saws in person Daniel. Would you buy one? Aren't they made in China? I think I'd rather have a nice older Lortone 10 if I were to want a 10" saw. If money didn't matter, I'd go with the Raytech 10". WAY nice saw. That one (Raytech 10) I refurbished is just begging me to keep it. What size are you looking for toiv0 ? Ok I'm ready to upgrade to a real "Big Girl Saw" wanna sell that Raytech Capt'n???

I have a 18 and 24 inch highland park saw right now. I want a saw that's a little smaller. What would the members here recommend both in brand and size if they were buying new and what would the reasoning be. DO NOT BUY ANYTHING FROM HI-TECH DIAMOND!!! I've spent all day on the phone with the owner of the company (they are super nice), cleaning up both pieces of equipment I bought from them and packaging to be sent back tomorrow!!! Quality just sux.

The Raytech is only a 10" saw. You need to go bigger!

I don't like the faucet knob on the clamp either, but trading it for a t-handle would be easy enough. I just welded together a new one for a slab saw at the clubs shop.

Way too expensive but I really like my 14" saw. Mine is a beacon star but diamond pacific makes it now. Easiest possible clean outs. whole top, arbor and blade hinge in the back so you just prop it up and scoop out all the oil from the tank. No complaints about performance and it really is built like a tank. www.diamondpacific.net/tc14trim.htmlChuck That is sweeet but boy it's pricey!! Any knowledge on the HP 14", cause looks like I'm in the buying market too?

Which HP 14? The new green ones made in China? Or the DP HP14?

The Raytech is only a 10" saw. You need to go bigger! I know, I know... ok so should I/we go with the Highland Park 14" or BD 14" I can't afford that other one. With the rising cost of plane fuel an all....

I'd love the Diamond Pacific but is the one you have Capt'n just as good? I mean that's an extra grand!

Which one I have? LOL
okay... let's slow down. Is cutting little rocks like you posted on your "don't buy this saw" thread really all you want to be able to cut?
If so, a 10" saw is probably all you need.

A good 3 to 4" x 4" yes. But definitely have to have power feed! My rocks seem to be really hard.

Maybe... www.diamondpacific.net/tc10trim.htmlI have not seen this saw. John may have information as he sells this brand. Arbor centered on table allows for cutting bigger rocks than the BD-10, and has power feed.

Think I'm going with Lortone LS12, looks like it would be a good fit. Should I buy from Kingsleynorth or The Rock Shed?

Coin toss there. About the same price when with shipping. I have done business with both. I'd probably go with Kingsley myself.
Call them tomorrow and ask any questions you may have about shipping etc. No need to order one tonight off a website is there?
One thing you might want to ask about is a blade upgrade.

Didn't mean to hop on your thread toiv0 , have you come to any conclusions? Hop away, threads almost always take different paths and we all enjoy and learn. I don't know what I am going to do yet. We are going into our busy time for work, I want something else and just found out a neighbor has a bunch of lapidary that belonged to his dad. To tangle the web even worse his dad left everything to his sister and they haven't talked since he passed a while back and its in his garage. He had I believe a 10 inch loretone, a vibratory flat lap I helped him rebuild and a pile of rough. I just might sit back for a while and watch the show. But if you buy a new saw let us know how you like it and is working for you.

That Lortone will look good in your shop. Thinkin' you may want to go with the stock blade after all while you learn the saw. You can always upgrade later if you want.
A good question to ask though would be if they have the saw in stock. And if not, get a date that you would receive it. Not in stock can sometimes mean quite a delay on delivery. You will also need saw oil.
While I'm thinking of it, I saw you have a Lot-O on the way. Most folks here fill the hole in the bottom of the barrel with epoxy I believe. (?) You can ask or read up on that.
