Think I'm going with Lortone LS12, looks like it would be a good fit. Should I buy from Kingsleynorth or The Rock Shed? I think the Lortone ls12 looks like a great saw. Just ordered the LS12.... here goes another learning curve! captbob!!!

New saw awesomness on the way! When is the due date? Congrats, that's quite a step up from the saw you returned.
ETA: I'm pretty sure there are threads on putting the epoxy (?) in the Lot-O hole. Maybe someone recalls it and can post a link.

I really like my LS12. Cuts everything smooth that I've thrown at it. No regrets buying it. You should like it.

Jugglerguy posted a thread with instructions for epoxying the hole. Chuck Thancha Chuck!! It is not too difficult. Just mix up the epoxy and get it onto the end of a piece of dowel rod and then let it drip into the hole. I would give it a few days to a week to cure nice and solid. Chuck

I didn't do anything special to fill the hole. I just used epoxy that I bought at Home Depot. I'm not sure what kind, but nothing special. I just twirled it on the end of a stick of wood, like you would with a honey dipper. Then I lowered it into the barrel and let the epoxy drip off into the hole. I use a short piece of PVC pipe as a stand for my barrel. Just make sure it's setting level and the epoxy will dry level. I filled the hole several years ago and haven't had any problems since.

Sounds like everyone has made up their minds. For anyone else here is a little info. BD (lapidary division of MK redesigned their slab saws some time ago when MK still owned the HP name but never used it. The bigger saws were changed over to the old HP drive system except gear box in back of saw and they named the saws HP- Highland Precision. They did not renew the Highland Park name, the old HP equipment was sold off to Contemporay long before. The Contemporary Lapidary was bought out by Diamond Pacific, They incorporated some features in their equipment and still make vibrolap and a few other of the old HP stuff. Highland Park (Chinese) found out the HP name trademark was expired and grabbed it and bought up all the old HP saws they could locate and started making copies in China. DP TC10 and their 14" saws are the old Beacon Star saws (another company they bought out). Very high quality but very expensive and no blade included. Lortone 12" and 10" saws always had a great reputation. The 14" saw is mostly known for cutting too fast. A lot of people swap out the drive motor with the 12" slower feed motor. THe HP(Barranca) 14" saw is based on the Star Diamond (BD started when MK bought out the bankrupt Star Diamond).

johnjsgems Hey John, do you sell both the BD 10 and the DP TC10 saws? I can hardly find a thing on the web about the Diamond Pacific TC 10 saw. That BD 10 is sexy as all get out, but I like that the TC 10 has the higher arbor and handle bigger rocks. Have you played with them both? You know of a video on the DP TC10 - like the one I found with the BD 10 saw?

I don't have a Lot-O, but I gather there is a "hole" - kinda like a belly button (but deeper?) at the bottom of the Lot-O barrel. Grit & stuff can get caught in this, so folks here fill it to prevent that from happening.

If the hole is not filled then you could get cross contamination of 120 or 220 grit coming loose later in polish. Chuck

Have you noticed the TC10 and TC14 also convert easily to trim saws that allow flush arbor trimming for things like 90 degree inside corners? The entire vice, rails and power feed all come off with a few quick thumbscrews turning it into a trim saw. I have never tried it but have taken that stuff off a few times for cleaning and it is easy. Chuck

The TC10 is the old Beacon Star 10" that Mel in Texas can't say enough good things about. I bought a Beacon Star at Buena Vista show and tore it down to refurbish but ran out of time before Winter trip. Looks to be a saw with great capacity. No videos that I know of. I've only sold I think 3 of the TC10's. Price scares off most buyers. The BD10 is one well designed saw but lacks cutting height with the thick vise. Very simple power feed clutch mechanism. Glad to hear the carriage is supposed to come off so easy, thought something was wrong when I removed a screw and whole carriage came off. If it only didn't have 30 plus years of caked on oily grime. Shameless plug, but my drop saw is the only American made 10" saw with a 4" cut and under $800. No power feed though.

captbob johnjsgemsI think those DP (beacon star) saws are the easiest saws to clean. I had a lortone before that had to be lifted off the base to clean it and I do not think I would do that again. I think DP should advertise how easy the TC line is to clean. clean outs seem to be a dreaded task for most slab saw owners. forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/thread/66812/painless-oil-changeChuck

The guy that owned this Beacon Star would probably ask "are you supposed to clean saws?
