I have a 18 and 24 inch highland park saw right now. I want a saw that's a little smaller. What would the members here recommend both in brand and size if they were buying new and what would the reasoning be.

I've never seen one of the new HP saws in person Daniel. Would you buy one? Aren't they made in China? I think I'd rather have a nice older Lortone 10 if I were to want a 10" saw. If money didn't matter, I'd go with the Raytech 10". WAY nice saw. That one (Raytech 10) I refurbished is just begging me to keep it. What size are you looking for toiv0 ?

Way too expensive but I really like my 14" saw. Mine is a beacon star but diamond pacific makes it now. Easiest possible clean outs. whole top, arbor and blade hinge in the back so you just prop it up and scoop out all the oil from the tank. No complaints about performance and it really is built like a tank. www.diamondpacific.net/tc14trim.htmlChuck

Lortone still makes their 12" saw with a more reasonable price than the BD saws. Don't know anything about new Lortone saws myself.

That's a nice saw Chuck! I like the high arbor. Didn't know you had that. Guess it doesn't make it in to your shop pictures.

You wanting manual feed or not? Are you wanting one to still cut the bigger stuff but not waist as much? Do you already have a trim saw and what size is it? So many variables it's hard to answer your question.

The only thing is the feed is a little fast for hard agate or very tough pet wood so I use a rheostat that jackangeline recommended...............................MrP
ETA rheostat

I have a lot of rock in the tennis ball size, I glue them onto a 2x4 but feel I waste alot. Just thinking of a size where there is not so much waste for the med to small material. I was thinking 12 or 14, @azrockgeek didn't seem to think there would be much difference between the 14 and 18 that I have. I do have a 6 in manual trim saw.

Fist size rocks are a pain to clamp in any style of vise. Try a good rock clamp and keep using your 18, I use this or gluing to a 2x4. Now theres a contraption I haven't seen before. Homemade? I want one

yuppers, that's one interesting rock grabber. Would love to see/try one!
What don't you like about the BD 14 vise Tim? I've not had any problems with it.

The shop where the grabbers are manufactured is a 5 minute drive from me, Pete is a great guy, has been a dealer at our show in the past.
My saw vote would be for the sexy Barranca, you could always run it with a 12 inch blade if you want less kerf loss.

That is a CRS Grabber. They make three different sizes and I have found them to be a great tool. Just need to make sure to real tighten it down, because of there only being three contact points. They are expensive , I the $300 range but worth every penny. They are made in Vancouver WA.

What is wrong with HP 14 vise? Very heavy duty and plated to allow water coolants. Unless you object to vise on left side? I heard the old Star Diamond engineer was left handed and when they redid their saws they were all left handed. BD uses the old Star Diamond castings and HP 14 is based on the original Star Diamond 14".
