My yellow stone turned out it didn't want to be a heart but just a freeform. Although i did find a local rock that i need to get a photo of incase i use it... When i found it I thought it was an orange agate like rock in black bassault due to its fracture. started grinding it a few weeks ago and it turned out to be mostly orange. Took it on my 2nd wheel today and was amazed by what i saw. WELL? Don't leave me hanging!

This project sounds fun. Don't think i'll have access to proper equipment to play but am watching with interest.

Its rather soft material so not a true jasper, but maybe some sort of ocean jasper.

For those folks watching, you don't need to make a staff / wand, just a photo found online will do to show context for your stones.

Oh My Goodness!!! What is that round multicolored bigger rock??? I WANT IT! That is Clay Canyon (aka Fairfield) variscite (also contains other rare minerals). Extremely expensive stuff, and yes it is soft.

I did stabalize 1 side by filling in most of the holes though which makes it look a little nicer. Definitally can't mess this stone up on the wheels, just have to polish it. Makes me wonder what other rare things I got in this collection.

Ohh goodie, remembered this week that I cut some staffs about 3 years ago for school-drama. Dug it out and the quartz will fit perfectly. Little progress otherwise, but have the next 2 days off, so should be able to get to polish stage.

I can see an entry from Metalsmith could well happen here... All subject to change until the closing date, but here for starters: Australian Boulder Opal Rough - an offcut left over with just a hint of possibility With the hint of a seam firming up, an idea develops Work in progress: looks more like Gem Silica than Boulder Opal, but a few pin-fires here and there give the game away: Finished Cab - the longest I've ever taken to cut a single cab (but then I did all the work on a 1200 lap!) - around 4 hours but this is one rock I don't want to s**w-up Australian Boulder Opal finished cab: waves of chocolate and opal the colour of chryocolla-gem-silica mix with a few fine blue-green pin-fires This might be my preferred stone. My hopes of photoshopping these into a wand have gone up the creek; with a lot of other things recently. This was to form the Dragon's eye. I guess my fourth rock in the wand collection would be the Dragon Green Chrysocolla I've been asking about elsewhere. These were all cut a couple of weeks back: Jelly Opal 11/03; Boulder Opal 1 12/03 02:30 - 06:30!! Boulder Opal 12/03, though it seemed like a different day somehow! Chyrsocolla 13/03 (unlucky for me as it turned out!)

I really like the color, looks like the aura

OK here's my entry... I made this staff several years ago out from a magical piece of Jack's beanstalk wood I found while out walking with the forest elves ... or rockhounding - I honestly don't remember where I was. I've always intended to cut a stone for the top of it ... and now I have and it feels *~ MaGiCaL ~* ... In fact I think just saw a unicorn! Or was that my dog... South African Pietersite Work in progress

Nice piece of pietersite you got there Tommy.
I'm out of the contest, as I broke the Koroit while sanding at 2000g paper (I put too much pressure on it and it snapped). The other pieces started earlier last week don't fit into the colour-sheme and I don't have the time to restart. The good news is that this will allow me to go better than planed, just not within the contest. Will continue though, but with cabs already made in the past as I really want to see it through. The quartz and ruby will stay and will add two small opals I did a few months back, plus a Chinese Pietersite that needs a final home. Its the only Pietersite that I ever managed to cut to form a near perfect Cats-eye.
