February 2017 Fun Cab Challenge This is a challenge to yourself... What is the best cab that you can create... posting the results of your creation whatever the outcome (just because the cab may not be the best please post anyway and if you like ask for feedback to improve). Theme chosen by prior month winner Glenn : Sorcerer's stone. This challenge is designed to be fun, every wizard from the universe of tv magic needs a good stone for a staff or wand. This months challenge is to create a cab or a set of cabs for a staff/wand as example below. You can find a photo of any staff/wand you would like your stone to be in to give us a better visual (you may edit the photo to put your stones in it). Props if you actually make a staff. If you would like to create more than 1 stone you can create up to 5 cabs, 1 large stone and 1-4 smaller stones. A wizard gets its power from one main stone and other stones feed it. Any materials and any shape will fit this theme, but think of what will work best for the world of magic if you seen a staff. You must make all (up to 5) stones this month. If you have more than 1 stone, you must include a group photo for voting!
example of a staff without stones Rules: All hand made cabbing techniques may be used. Cabs entered must be hand shaped (can be finished in a tumbler) and be completed by the last minute of the month in your timezone. They can be started before the month but only finished during the month. You must have 1 photo of ether a preform or slab of the rock. You can enter up to 3 individual finished piece (not combined) photos and 1 of the 3 photos will be used for voting to see what cab folks like the most (please note the photo you want used). You can change your photos or improve your cab and place new photos in your original post replacing old photos by the deadline. Finished jewelry cabs may not be entered (unless otherwise specified by the theme). It is OK if there is a hole drilled in the cab without a jump ring, as long as there is no extras on the rock (wire, chord, etc.) All entries submitted to this contest must be unique to this competition (not submitted in several different competitions). Any duplicates will not be included in the voting list. Feel free to share with us the story behind your workings or material. Also, don't forget to include the name of the material. If a tie occurs in the voting the breaker will be whoever submitted the finished item first. If there are any questions feel free to ask. Beginners to old timers are welcome. Prize : winner is allowed to chose theme for the month following voting, no physical prize yet.

2 questions: Wand OK? if we are allowed up to 5 pieces of stone and only one cab actually goes into the vote (at least thats the way I understand it); does that mean 4 pieces could be taken from the drawer and the one up for vote is the one that has to be especially made for this?

glennz01 This is exciting!!! With this challenge I get to intertwine my favorite hobbies!!! Custom Festival Costume with Cabbing! Oh My what an unusual an awesomely perfect challenge!! Guys whom have Etsy shops: Look at the custom Cosplay/Festival Costume pages!!! If you have a site there this challenge can open the doors to another selling avenue. I have made two custom costumes without my stones (pre-stones actually) and made $400 profit or more off of them. These people pay a crap load of money to buy specialty pieces like Glenn's challenge! Now for the QUESTIONS 😂 Does the Cab or cabs need to be set in the staff? Or just magical looking cab/cabs that would look good in one?

All 5 cabs 1 larger and up to 4 smaller must be made this month and are all part of the entree. I should edit the post to place a group photo of the cabs for the voting as you would like them to appear in the staff.

I don't expect anyone to be able to make an awesome staff or wand as some of them have floating stones as well. However if you can make an awesome staff or wand feel free to post photos, i'm sure we would all love to see that. I was originally thinking of the contest to be to replicate a necklace from an anime / movie or what not but thought wizards would be funner

Found me some materials that were in my special bin as i wanted to be good enough to cab them when the time came. I just want to try and find 2 local stones now.

OK, I think I'm in. Quartz, with ruby (slight shiller effect), koroit and unknown (slight cats-eye), as inset. Now will have to find a staff to support the point.

I was thinking about doing a point also with my new flat lap system... i'll have to see what tomarrow brings for local materials I slabbed up in the recent past.

Just say final product, as per usual a preform photo is still required. if you enter one cab and have multiple photos i choose the one that shows the stone the best unless you have one noted you want for voting.

When we send the picture of the actual finished "To Be Considered for Challenge" should we label it like that or something similar? Yep, yep and yes..... Originally, years ago, contests where started with whole sets of pictures from beginning to end. For one, it was supposed to help newcomers, and second it kept the contest appearing more often and hence in peoples minds. Today, it got easier to take pictures, yet it seems we need to make it a condition to add a second picture. Yes, it went rather quickly (for me anyhow). Those are the best fit out of 7 pieces I tried. But do be reminded that the Quartz is a given shape, all the others are cutoffs from previous projects; so shaping them is a matter of an hour (for me) as I don't dop. I do everything by/in hand on the quick, and see where it goes....... Now comes the tedious part. Sanding and polish over the coming week, and then where I will spend more time than anything else; setting them into the quartz (the main reason for participating, as I need to practice cleaner lines).

As we get more newcomers we can always morph the rules. Feel free to make suggestions if you have any. I'm not quite sure what you mean my a 2nd photo condition. At minimum a preform / slap and final photo is required but more photos the merrier. I do like the idea of showing progress. My yellow stone turned out it didn't want to be a heart but just a freeform. Although i did find a local rock that i need to get a photo of incase i use it... When i found it I thought it was an orange agate like rock in black bassault due to its fracture. started grinding it a few weeks ago and it turned out to be mostly orange. Took it on my 2nd wheel today and was amazed by what i saw.
