Lakers never cease to amaze me. I decided to slice this fairly large one in half today and got a surprise. This one came in a trade from toiv0 so I welcome any information about it. deserves better photos. These are just hand held at the workbench. Chuck

That's gorgeous. I know it's atypical of what I've seen in other photos, but it's just another reminder I have to find a way to get my hands on some of this stuff. Very nice.

Your rock convinces me to pay attention to ho-hum stones. It's a beauty! Thanks.

The variety of Lakers is incredible. That's awesome. Are you going to tumble it or polish just the cut face?

I see three options. 1) polish the 2 faced halves 2) cut one slab off of one side to cab then polish the remaining pieces 3) slice it all up and get about 5 cab size slabs What would you recommend toiv0? Don't know if it's a "no-no" or not, so I'll be "that guy" inside this thread. Typically, who or what is the best source for lakers? Rock Shed has been out for a while. I'd be looking for tumbler size, say 1-2" size range or thereabouts. Thanks and regards.

Very cool! In his "Agate" book, Zenz identifies that agate type as a "fragmented membrane agate". Guess those are little curved pieces off the membrane that forms between the outer shell and the interior of the agate nodule. I occasionally see those in Rio grande agate too....Mel

Chuck I just sent an email to a friend on who would be the best to answer that question. I am far from tht expert as I really don't have a collection and everything I have eventually moves on to a new home. I will also see him on friday, resist the urge to do anything until a real expert chimes in. My first gut is if you are going to keep it for yourself do what Chuck likes as it is what you like that is really important.

That is a safe bet and leaves the option of slabbing and cabbing open for a later date if ever desired. After googling Sabre52's "fragmented membrane agate" term I am leaning toward fragmented membrane agate with opal. I think that yellow creamy area is opalized. www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/lake-superior-agate-1lb-7oz-odd-503954413Chuck

Dave I have been really happy with the ones I have gotten from toiv0 so I will recommend him as a trusted source. Any time you are just buying lakers by the pound sight unseen you will get a percentage of junk agate. I have purchased over 100 pounds and have only yielded about 35 pounds of keepers that have good color and pattern. The rest have just been tossed into my mixed rock bins. Chuck

Chuck when you buy agates from the pickers you have to go through them and cast off the jaspers and cherts which are sometimes half the booty. This is the case with the last I bought, this brings their purchase price up to double what you paid. Then as Chuck said even if not sight unseen when you start cherry picking the price goes up again. I just pay a per pound price and take what is offered. When I ship out some to someone its the same senerio, I just dip into the bucket and what comes out comes out, I do try and make sure there is some nice ones in the mix.
