This is a list of the top 10 search terms for fire pits. Term 'fire pit' is by far the #1 search term. Firepit is #32 search term. The space makes a big difference. Recently a bunch of fire pit signs monopolized the 'fire pit' search term by using the poor grammar term 'firepit' in their titles and tags and descriptions. This bumped all people using the term 'fire pit' to the bottom of the list. And raised all those to the front using the term 'firepit' to top of list. It is so messed up that when you type in search term 'fire pit' Etsy autocorrects it to "firepit". So you can no longer search using term 'fire pit' if you wanted to. So I changed 'fire pit' to 'firepit' in tags/titles/descriptions and instantly dominated the fire pit category aside from signs. My fire pit competitors have not noticed this quirk. firepit = improper english but search engines are not grammatically correct. Screen shot showing 10 top search terms, 'fire pit' certainly #1: Open this link and see what I am talking about. I am firepitsatlanta. Type 'fire pit' into search line and notice it defaults to 'firepit'. Note my title on each listing reads "Firepit Fire Pit" so both terms are in the title. www.etsy.com/search?q=firepit&explicit=1&page=1"Firepit Fire Pit" in title: This competitor also came up front and center because his company name is "TheFirePitGallery". Firepit without a space. In key location. I have contacted Etsy about this fluke. If in fact it is a fluke. If the #1 search term yields signs of the target product instead of the target product search then their search algorithms are certainly messed up. In this case the algorithm logic has been mutated by a surge of false products.

That's really strange. I haven't seen that before. I'm glad you figured it out!! Should give you an edge. When did you optimize for it and how much of a change in search have you seen?

Playing the game ... Tela - in light of your recent purchase - or this is probably old hat to you - in my search terms "thunderegg" is near the top - then "thunder egg" is midway down page two but still respectable and important. Just as standard practice whenever there is ambiguity on the name like this I try to put both spellings in the title, description, and tags. Collawood vs. Colla Wood

JamesP staying on top of his game! When I search Craig's list, I search all common mis spellings, space and no space. One thing that never ceases to amaze me is how louzy (sic;-)people spell. Don't believe me, do a search on CL for "wheelbarrel" VS "Wheelbarrow"

Oh well, I sell 90% of my fire pits thru Etsy. Either direct or funneled from web site.
Since Etsy made this search term change my sales came to a screeching halt. So has my top 3 competitor's sales. No sales for 12 days straight except two prearranged sales from the old search terms.
The internet is a living organism. In this case the organism made a damaging strike on my business.
To save my nice business I have joined Google Analytics to attack the efficiency and SEO optimization of my website with the aid of hired help.
Google Analytics is free.
It will tell you:
Views per day Those that viewed site twice Their browser their operating system the town they viewed from the time they viewed from the amount of direct clicks the amount of organic clicks the amount of clicks per page the time spent on any chosen page of your web site their ID number their age their income bracket their computer type the bounce rate(people that accidentally landed on your page or viewed it less than 30 seconds) the money made per listing the country of origin of the viewer the demographic information of the viewer etc etc etc many more things like page efficiency and photo tag efficiency
Web designer is frank and open and inexpensive. She says she can make my website a mean machine but only with the use of Google analytics. We will see....i doubt I will funnel all my business to Etsy for a while. Etsy says it is a temporary experiment. I gave them a piece of my mind.
7 minute intro to how it works and it can be applied to builders like Wix/Go Daddy/etc:

I'm closing my etsy jewelry shop. I'm so over their shenanigans. I was never in this to get rich, by any means, so going off on my own won't be so bad. I'll lose sales, but I won't have to deal with etsy. My rock shop may close down the line, too. I am working on my site as we speak. I am happy for any of your tips. My shop isn't open, yet, but I am ready for google analytics. I never could make much use of it, though. I need a pro. It's all pretty much gobbly gook to me.

Today your named Ohio based competitor is way down the first page with you in the third row. His pits are quite artistic, but they all look like a blazing forest fire. Can't say that I like the symbolism one bit. Took me a little while to realize what I found so unsettling about his work.
This is the time of year I think about planting and cleaning up around the outside of the house. While I WILL be buying one of your fire pits (firepits) I personally would wait until later in the year. Just getting too dang hot to sit around a fire, even at night.

I wanna get one for my daughter really bad. She goes through the cheap ones like crazy. Doesn't matter how hot it is, she likes to have a fire going. When I get back from vacation this summer and cover those expenses maybe I can get one then. I won't complain about the cost. I know it will last for years!!!

That I do appreciate. Google analytics is not so complicated. Pay attention to the youtube videos. What is complicated is 'how to' improve your website. A lot of it is keywords tags ant title words that you the layman, that knows his product, can do better than a web designer. TAGS ON PHOTOS, not DSC 4765 for a photo. You can ad title description and tags on every photo. Big help on search and coming up on google images. Etsy retort: "Hi Jim, Thanks for following up with me, and for bringing this to our attention. I've checked in with the appropriate teams on this and they've confirmed this is a continuation of the spelling correction test I mentioned. Please know we're monitoring the results very closely, and will update the community if we decide to permanently implement anything. For the time being, the best thing you can do is include both words and phrases in your listing titles or tags. This way, you are elidgable to appear in both results. Thanks again for bringing this to our attention. Going forward we'll keep all of your thoughts in mind! If you have any other questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to let me know. Best, Isabella" To my complaint: "Thanks Isabella Well, in this case the autocorrect is changing ‘fire pit’ to ‘firepit’ and about the only thing showing up with the #1 search term ‘fire pit’ is misspelled(firepit) fire pit signs. My sales came to a quick halt since(about 10 days ago). The search term ‘fire pit’ is the #1 search term on google-yahoo-bing-etc. At a factor of about X10. Firepit is a poor search term in general, just saying. I added ‘firepit’ to titles and tags and quickly resolved the problem getting my listings well placed. But I stand alone, very few competitive fire pits are shown for a shopper to compare to. Due to their grammatically correct term ‘fire pit’ in titles and tags... I am not sure a blog or forum discussion will solve this issue. I could contact my competitors to change their titles and tags. But that seems illogical. We are not a large group. Anyway, it seems a good category to run such a test, being quite small by Etsy standards. I would appreciate any information regarding this situation. I am aware things are constantly changing, simply the nature of things. Thanks Jim"

You have to pick up, and bring family so I can molest your kids(in good way ha). Picker-uppers get a nice discount. Rocks. Plants. other goodies. Yes, a bit hot. Funny Mem Day the 4th, Labor day are big sales times. They are fire pits, not firepits. No discounts on firepits, just fire pits.

I'm afraid for you that hearing Etsy say "if we decided to implement..." actually means "that plan is firmly cemented in place by 10 feet of concrete and ain't going NOWHERE anytime soon sucker!" Good that you have a workaround - both spellings.

Guess what I have been doing for 2 days? Renaming each and every one of my pictures! LOL! I had been tag naming them, but etsy renames images, so I quit doing it. Playing catch up now. Well, I'm glad you got a human at etsy and not some form letter. I hate when they run their tests. They don't say a word and your shop is dead while you sit there going- What the hell did I do wrong???

Once it is done you are done, EXCEPT if you have a revolving door of products. Then it gets taxing. I will say Tela, that I counted google images of my 48 inch fire pit before tagging photos and after. Three images before tagging, 6 images the day after tagging. IF CUSTOMER clicks on that google image and opens it, the link to the Etsy listing comes up next to photo. DON"T underestimated the value of that image to the shopper, and then his ability to link directly to it's purchase. I buy weed stuff all the time by looking at the variety of images to find my needed item this way.

OK, I went to Google analytics survey last night since it looks like I got to dial in my website due to Etsy's transgressions. Screen one, firepitsatlanta.com, 1rst day I obtained a google analytics tracking number and attached it to my website. Had 12 visits from 10 people. 2 came back. But one of the two was a bounce(accidental view basically). Come backs are good. 4.5 minutes average view. 3 minutes or more is great. But one guy looked at it for 20 minutes. 7 pages were viewed on average-excellent, clients have depth. Bounce rate less than 60% is good. So 33% bounce rate is great. However, 12 views in one day is 1/10 the daily views I get on Etsy. So SEO is needed. Views are coming in from 12PM to 11 PM.
