Taking a short trip to Fremont in November. Don't know if i can convince my wife to trek any further than an hour away for tumbling rough, fossils or mineral specimens.
Anything nearby for rockhounding / collecting?

Taking a short trip to Fremont in November. Don't know if i can convince my wife to trek any further than an hour away for tumbling rough, fossils or mineral specimens. Anything nearby for rockhounding / collecting? Hmmm... one hour from Fremont is tough. Two hours would be better... I'll throw some random thoughts out. Walnut Creek - Shell ridge (1 hour) from Fremont. We hike the trails here a lot. The entire hill it seems is made of ancient sea floor teeming with sea shells. Fun place to poke around - nothing of lapidary quality available that I've ever found. Vacaville (1.5 hours) Consolidated Rock and Gem - best rock shop in Northern California if you ask me. Ocean beaches like Pescadero are always fun - Google says it's closer but realistically 1.5 hours from Fremont with traffic. The coast from Pescadero down to Santa Cruz is littered with beaches where you can usually sift through areas of rocks and pebbles. The beach just to the immediate south Pescadero State Beach is usually productive although we haven't had a big storm in a while so it could be covered with that nasty stuff they call sand. At times it can be difficult to climb down into these coastal beach areas. Bolinas - for oil agate pebbles - about 2 hours away on the coast north of the Golden Gate Bridge Panoche - Area 54 (2 hours) - crappy jasper if you ask me but it's fun to try to find something nice. Last I heard the gate is closed but the area is still open for collecting. Stony Creek (2.5 hours) - jaspers galoreThat's about all I can think of. There are other more famous sites like Morgan Hill but without a guide or inside information it would be a waste of time in my opinion.

Here you go.
House of Poppy Jasper 17450 Monterey Road Morgan Hill, CA
408-782-7555 is for Gino Acevedo’s work. I think his son runs the shop now. Gino started out as a gold smith, then rockhound.
Enjoy!

Thanks all. Not sure i'll make it to Morgan Hill, but Stony Creek looks amazing and might warrant a side trip. Tommy - Did i miss something in your post or videos about how to access the areas open to the public for collecting?

That's el toro brewing co and is currently for sale. Damn... is it still open for business or shut down? Can you imagine if the new owners come in and remodel and toss those counter tops out?

Pescadero is probably your best bet. It's more than an hour away from Fremont but it's so scenic that your wife probably wouldn't mind too much.
There's a large chain of specialized nurseries on the road that leads into Half Moon Bay if she's into gardening.

I just did a quick Google search and it looks like there are several beaches in the area (Pigeon Point, Bean Hollow, Pebble). Looks like there are some signs that warn against removing pebbles.

There's a rocky stretch of beach just south of Pescadero State Beach. Park at the third lot (which is by some really scenic cliffs) and slowly work your way down the path. There are some basic stairs carved into the cliffside and lots of invasive ice plant you can grab to keep your balance. www.sfgms.org/pescadero0209.html

Park before you get to the A-frame house. Find a well-worn path down to the cliff. It's a little sketchy to get down, but not too bad. Depending on the tides, there are lots of agates here. Lynn
