Well I've got it soaking in vinegar at the moment - the white 'dirt' in the crystal cavity does react to the acid but its gonna take a while (months?) to get it cleaned out.

What type of vinegar do you use? Plain white distilled? Whatever kind I can steal from the missus without getting caught Yes white distilled. Hope its strong enough - knowing me and how impatient I am with stuff like this I'll probably check it every day for progress haha.

Try it on scrap first

Baking soda NaHCO₃ to neutralize after effect.

Masonry cleaners are a (somewhat) safer alternative to Muriatic acid. They contain detergents and soaps and varying, but smaller, amounts of acid. I've used a product called "Sure Klean 600" successfully to clean quartz-based stones. It's made by ProSoCo and is available at most masonry supply places and Sherwin Williams stores. ProSoCo makes many products specifically designed for cleaning specific masonry materials, including various types of stone. www.prosoco.com/products?term=Cleaning

Man, that is an interesting find. I went there to dig once and after a bit just decided those eggs were not worth messing with. Great find and I really like how you cabbed it to leave the botryoidal material....Mel

When I was young my dad almost killed us with it lol. He was rebuilding the top end on a motorcycle and he got the bright idea of dropping the head into a bucket of pool acid to clean it - the ensuing thick cloud of gas spread out over the whole back yard - we had to jump over the fence into our neighbor's back yard to escape it.

Ouch ... literally. That is what remains of a blood blister from trying to window a rock - I whacked my skin along with the rock. Surprising amount of pain for about a week as that stupid thing healed.

I once had the bright idea to put my nose tight down to an unmarked gallon jug and take a big whiff to see if it had muriatic in it. Yep...it did. That was in the late 70s and I still haven't fully recovered my sense of smell.
Something to keep in mind is that muriatic can dry out, then be reconstituted with water. I ruined a lot of work clothes during my working years that didn't seem to have been splattered until they came out of the washing machine full of holes.

So I am not the only one that has no patience and feels the need to check on the progress This is the same reason why I can't use a rotary tumbler When I discovered vibe tumbling I was like "oh, so you mean I can load it up and tumble for 24 hours and be ready to change it? and it's OK to check it at any time?" ... very cool

Okay, gotta ask - Why would anyone put muriatic acid in a gallon jug and not mark it??? A big whiff of that would definitely ruin your sense of smell. Lucky it did not injure your lungs.
In a previous life (almost 40 years ago!), I worked for a florist making deliveries in their company van. The florist was part of a nursery as well. I was unaware that one of the boys there used the van to go get a battery for one of the other vehicles. Dried acid, you don't see it. But when I washed my brand new Levis, holes appeared in the knees and down the fronts of them! I had a good boss, though. He paid for a new pair of Levis! Acid is nothing to trifle with.
