From the Gem Shop? How much did you buy? That stuff looks too nice to break up. It would look better slabbed.

I have a 3-1/2 # chunk of mook in waiting. Hope it is as nice as those pics. It's been hard keeping my mitts off, but have been trying to decide what to do with it. Have about decided to cut it in half with the saw (when I have learned how to use it!) then bust up one half with the hammer and use the saw to cut smaller pieces of the other half. Then I will use the dremel to shape those pieces before tumbling them. I am thinking I should be able to shape them with a silicone carbide grinding wheel or burr, but if that doesn't work, I will try my new diamond burrs.
Wish I had all that neat equipment to make slabs and such, but I don't, so just gotta do the best I can do with what I got.
Of all the rocks I have seen, I do think the mook is one of the prettiest. Just hope this one I have is a beautiful as yours and the ones William (or maybe it was James, or Don) posted the pics of.
Got that Old Timers Disease and can't remember who posted the first pics of the mook. I HAD to have some and bought the only piece of it they had left at the rock shop. It was my lucky day!

Hey Ilana. If you want to grind with your dremel, the diamond burrs should work, but so will the green carbide grinding wheels. The green carbide will rip off material from a mohs 7 rock with no problem.

That's your mook John!?! That is gorgeous. Just what I've been looking for. I had hesitated buying any from the Gem Shop because their pic doesn't show any with the purple in it. And personally I think the purple is what makes it so pretty because it contrasts with the other colors so well. Now I'll have to order some from them. Did you email them with your preference for the purple in the stone or call them?

John, that is one pretty piece of Mookaite buddy. I am no authority on Mook, but I can tell you I have handled a mess of it in the last several years. It is by far one of my favorite stones, probably tied in 1st place with flintridge. And that piece you have is a winner John. Mook is a funny stone, very tempermental, and hard to work with at times. A lot of it is junk, full of fractures, laden with a chalky like cortex and slag that can run on the inside as well as on the surface. It is not easy to find good solid pieces period. Let alone ones with color like that. Like I said, I have gone through a lot of mook to find the pieces I used to make the arrowheads in the pics below. These are a couple of my favorite pics from the last couple of years, all Mook. I thought I'd post them so you could get a look at Mook jasper how I usually use it. Cheers for finding a super piece of Mook, talk to you later, Don This is a trick photo, there are actually only 10 points on here and I mirrored them to make this pic. the next pic is of the only one of the above points that I still own. I kept him because of the alien image on it. Can you see the long necked guy with the big snoze? One more, here is a leaf blade. Hidding in some fall foilage, this was a real colorful piece and seemed to match the leaves pretty well.

Don, I am drooling over that mook! It is so pretty. Hope the piece I got is just close to being that nice.
Ron, I have already worn a silicone carbine grinding wheel down to a nub cleaning up some really cool pieces of flint before it goes into the tumbler. Works great - and that dust gets everywhere! Also managed to grind away a bit of my thumb! LOL!
I love my dremel and can't wait to play around with the diamond burrs. Just got them today and need to get some oil.
At one of the rock shops I went to when I first got into this tumbling thing, the lady that owned the shop also made jewelry and all sorts of neat stuff. She uses baby oil with her dremel. I have been trying to decide what kind of oil to get. On the thread about cutting rocks with a diamond blade, somebody mentioned mineral oil. Sandsman1 said tool cool, but I don't know when I can get back to the rock shop to get any of that and I am anxious to play around with the burrs. Any recommendations on the oil?
