I can't look at it anymore, it keeps staring back at me. The owl is the worst. I have a laker that has a hole through it that looks like it was some kind of life at some point. Hard to say if its just some weird fortification or fossil imprint. I really like it, would make a nice cab if those fractures are sealed.

Agree. Trace fossil, or fortifications/strange banding.

Ok then Im not the onky one😂 It almost looks like a grasshopper or some type of beetle. Then I thought, maybe it's just odd banding?? Even my daughter who doesnt get the whole rock thing, thinks it's a beetle.

Parallel lines like that quite distinct from fortification on agates often appear as surface structures in flints/ cherts. I'm thinking they will not be visible if you cut this into slabs, but easily could be wrong. I have seen agates that have such markings that do not continue into the body of the stone.

The more I look at it the more I agree with exactly what you said. Debating whether or not to throw it in the tumbler.

I see a trilobite.
Possible this is chert and not LSA?

I see a trilobite. Possible this is chert and not LSA? Always thought it was a laker. I will post a picture of the sides of it, so you can see why I lean this way.....plus, it doesn't have the feel or look that I am use to with Chert, a ton of that around Mn as well, so it very well could be??

Don't even know if trilobites are found in chert!

It looks to be about a 1/4 in thick. I could try as the side with the most fortification is a little concave. Might end up being a low dome. It also has some small pits and a fracture. Wouldn't guarantee but would give it a try if you would like.

It looks very similar to a few pieces of what Jeremy and I assumed were Chert in the San Jacinto a couple weeks ago. Have one or two of them in Coarse tumble at the moment. Will try and remember to pull it out and post a picture.

How 'bout simply glacial gouging? Hhhhmmmmm🤔 I dont think glacial gouging. Usually straight "gouged" lines. You can actually see lines on both sides I would venture to guess it is a laker that has been stained by minerals in the deposit. We do have agates that resemble chert, and besides what is chert or agate but microcrystaline quartz?

Never fall in love with your rock such that you are afraid to deal with it as it is appropriate. If it needs to be tumbled, do it. If it needs to be shaped, do it. If you need to work some more to get rid of those damned scratches, do it. You are saving it from obscurity, not trying to preserve it in any pristine form. I say its chert with a trace of some beastie in it, but what do I know.

Looks like fort banding to me. Sometimes the color difference is quite obscure or non-existent between bands. Plus it's covered in limonite.
If you get it wet/oiled it will probably look like more of a laker.
