Take a hammer and break a corner off. Which one Scott? The second green guy? Yes, if there is an easy corner there. Also scratch with a knife. You will have two characteristics to evaluate.

Based on results you provide, it cannot be quartz. Quartz won't crumble nor will it scratch with a knife. Google "chlorite schist" Thanks Ali, that was fun. i love getting unexpected results.

I thought I had commented before, but I guess I didn't. This is one rock stuffed thread! You go girl! You collected some nice stuff, too. I love that green dendritic opalite. Great cab, too. What we won't do for a beautiful rock! I learned to cab by hand, but I MUCH prefer to dop. Saves the nails and fingers. The top of my left pointer gets bumped on the course wheels so I tape it up with that green alligator tape. You might try some on your fingers and or thumb. Thank you Tela
Someone told me I have to let the opal sit for a year before I try to do anything with it, so Ill be patiently waiting to try to do something with it
I love tumbling, but the cabbing is really fun and challenging (for me anyways) I cant wait to do some more
Now tapping my fingers is a great idea!!!
I have some Opal curing, that I bought from Tony....It was cured in oil....Its ready to get finished now... (Been sitting for a year)...

Nice stuff. Kind of jealous, as it will be at least a month before I can search for rocks. Still have 4" of snow over ice on the ground here in most places. A couple years ago, There was no snow, warm temps, and grass was getting green. Then, I was rock hunting at this time.
