18, 20, 22, 24, 26 and 28 gauge round or square wire. Those are the most common sizes I use to wrap. I use 21 and 22 gauge half round the most for the bindings. I'm sure the Queen of Wire Wrapping, Tela, will be here shortly to tell you what she uses most.

I use 14gauge half-round to make jumprings for bracelets and necklaces. Also use a lot of 18. Gauge for other jumpring designs.
I don’t wrap.

My main wires I work with are 20 gauge square and 20 gauge round for the wires that go around the stones and 22 gauge half round for bindings. That makes up 99% of the wire I use. Next question you need to ask is hardness. Each gauge of wire is available in different hardness levels. I think round wire is harder to work with for the main wires. I recommend starting with square and moving up to round when ready. For learning purposes you can't go wrong with a one pound spool of square copper wire from rio-grande. $24 for 250 feet. A pound of half round is pretty much a lifetime supply at 1,200 feet per pound. I use less then 2 feet of half round in each wrap. www.riogrande.com/product/Copper-Square-Wire-1-Lb-Spool-20-Ga-Dead-Soft/132420www.riogrande.com/product/Copper-Half-Round-Wire-1-Lb-Spool-22-Ga-12-Hard/132671Chuck

I think hummingbirdstones nailed it. And, yes, like Chuck says, hardness matters, too. It all depends on what kind of wrapping you want to do. I don't do much coiling or weaving so I use less of the smaller gauges (24, 26 and 28). For traditional border wrapping, I use 20 soft round and half hard mostly. I bind with 21 and 20 g 1/2 hard 1/2 round.

Hi hummingbirdstones Robin what hardness do you use on the 18-28 gauge wire in the round and square wire for wrapping? Thanks ~Duke

TheRock it really depends on what I'm using it for. If I'm using a bunch of wires to wrap a cab, I'll use dead soft for that, especially in the larger gauges. It can work harden pretty quickly and that makes it harder to form around a cab. If it's a small cab and I'm using smaller gauge wire for the wrap, I'll use either dead soft or half hard, depending on what I have on hand. The smaller gauges are easier to work even if they become work hardened. This is for both round and square. The caveat here is for the really small gauges - 24, 26, 28 and 30. I almost always use those for weaving wires and I always get dead soft for those. The small wires work harden really fast and will just break off if you bend them too much (which I'm really good at). If I'm using the wire as a frame for a weave, then I'll use half-hard for the stablility. I only use round for weaving, unless it's part of a wrap that I used square wire for and I'm weaving the bail. I always buy half-hard half round wire for bindings. After all is said and done, you can always anneal half-hard wire to make it dead soft or gently tap dead soft with a raw hide mallet to harden it a little if you need to.

You forgot 22 round 1/2 hard. That soft is practically useless. You can twist it to harden it, though.

rockjunquie @drummond Island Rocks Naturally being the clean and organized type, I am already planning my next move and thinking of Wire Storage. Can anyone tell me if all the wire that I purchased comes on spools? I Sure hope so. Thanks ~Duke

TheRock, since you bought 1 lb spools, I'd say yes. I get wire both on spools and off the spool. Just depends on where you buy it usually. If it said 1 lb spool, then that's what you should be getting.

If all those wire spools are from riogrande, yes, they come on spools.
