No complexity in this tumbling shop Bily. Coarse as hell SiC in the rotary, AO 220 in the vibe. Both best left running a bit longer for abrasive breakdown for best polish. Miss ingawh recommends 1/4 teaspoon of media. Real men think if 1/4 teaspoon is good a full teaspoon is better. Metamucil? Cat litter? Chia seeds? I think you meant a 1/4 teaspoon of GRIT, right? LOT'S of media. Or were you referring to the thickener? I don't tend to measure that precisely when I cook, but I have an actually set of teaspoons out by the Lot-O, and it really is only a 1/4 tsp. of 500 AO for the 2nd and final step. (If I'm doing a 220 load, I'll use more like a 1/2 teaspoon. ) The amount of Metamucil is less strict, and starts as an approximate 1/4 tsp, but it is less precise and I may add a slight dusting more if the slurry needs it.

I started this hobby a year+ ago using rotary tumblers (all stages to polish). I thought I was happy with the polish achieved... until I tried the vibratory tumblers. Now I only use my rotary tumblers to shape the rocks with the coarser grits, then shift to the vibs for 220 grit to polish stages. I am MUCH happier. I have a Thumler's Ultra Vibe UV-10 and UV-18. For the past half year my UV-10 is collecting dust on the shelf. I love the UV18+++ ... Even tho the noise level in my garage is horrendous... I wear my shooting ear muffs... a must! (good cross hobbies... shooting and rockhounding... lots of opportunities... LOL) The woodman link to the RockTumbler.com is very informative regarding vibe use... I highly recommend it. I am retired, and was seeking some hobby that would keep my "Type-A" personality in-check... gotta be busy all the time. I realized that dream by adding vibe tumbling into the mix. I am busy ALL the time now. Lol! If you are the type to leave the house and travel around (business or pleasure), rotary tumbling is good... BUT vibe tumbling requires daily (even hourly - in the beginning stages!!!) attention... not a good fit... BUT better shine! I 2nd that. I so wish I had bought the UV-18 instead of the mini UV-4 and than buying a bowls of the UV-10 to use on the mini base, same motor. I would like to transfer my whole load from my model B rotary to the vibe with extra ceramics for cushioning, instead of doing them in batches.
