If the lines fade from sanding and polishing it needs to be re-etched then lightly sanded just on the top layers with 1000 grit crocus cloth.

Yes buffing drags out some of the black oxide layer left by the Feric chloride. Buffing doesn't allow you to hit just the high spots. I used auto sandpaper 600 to 1000 grit some guys go as high as 2000. This weekend I might tire up the forge and work on a Damascus project I've been wanting to do for a while I've been lacking motivation but this thread has me wanting to give it a go.

Will you post what you do? I'd love to see it. Thanks for all of your help- and thanks to everyone else, too. I ordered the cut off wheels. If that doesn't work- I'll get a HB grinder.

I looked up the fiberglass reinforced cut off wheels for the foredome they should work but a little light and you'll probably go through them pretty fast. Dremel makes or has a cut off wheel that isn't reinforced make sure you don't get that type, a 4-41/2 inch angle grinder with the thin wheels would be much better and probably safer too.(next on list metal cutting band saw just saying ).

That's a great necklace, I've owned/own several knives made from Damascus, never Pakistani, though. If any off you get serious with Damascus take a look at Devon Thomas, his Stainless is great. devinthomas.com/Chad Nichols, too: nicholsdamascus.com/

I got the dremel brand ones to use with the foredom. They are 1.5 inches and look to be much better than their regular thin cut off wheels. These are reinforced, too, and they have the ez lock mandrel. I was gonna try it today outside, but it's a bit chilly out for me. I'm a wimp when it comes to cold. Also found an angle grinder on harbor Freight that got good reviews. If these wheels don't work- then that's next. DH has a band saw, so I could get a new blade for that, too. I'll git 'er done- one way or the other!!!!
