Hi -- first photo so I'll try to get it up here in small-file form. Just a shot of some of my favorites amongst the stones I've tumble-polished on a Lortone, including 2 that I made into wire-wrap jewelry (jasper on left, carnelian on right).

Thanks for the welcome and kind words, mohs and vegasjames! Mind-blowing agate you're holding there, mohs, but I suppose that's why it's your profile pic! In what geographic region was it found?

Hey Joe I’m pretty sure my profile picture is a Brazilian agate Yes it is an awesome specimen Even more unique is: that it is ground into a dish shape Perfectly Its was not done by me and don’t know who did it. But it really is killer grinding technique I made thread about it to try and find out how this grind technique is accomplished Haven’t had satisfactory answer yet forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/thread/82386/cyclops-contact-lensmaybe you know ? if so Joe let the mohs know ha ha

Very nice tumbles and wraps Joe rockdoc ! Which Lortone tumbler are you using? Your results are excellent... very good shapes and polish.

Thank you all! Yes, all self-collected, mostly from around the Willamette, a few may be from Ochoco area and/or the coast. gmitch067 I can get you the model of the Lortone I use. I think the important things for good results are 1. Selection of smooth and very hard rocks to tumble (e.g. high-silica content such as jaspers and agates usually easily take a high polish) ; 2. Using all 4 stages of tumbling grit; 3. Cleaning well after each stage, ESPECIALLY between stages 3 (pre-polish) and 4 (polish). Also no broken rocks especially in stage 4, and check for broken rocks and select those out between each cycle. I usually do a full week for each cycle, so it's about a month from rough to polish. I've gotten pickier with time about what I'll polish too. I used to do a lot of pretty drab, yellowish jasper, and now I stick with more interesting stones. The collection in the photo is also culled from a large number of stones, so the colors and textures are particularly varied.

@mohs I'm actually pretty new to lapidary, especially anything other than tumbling, so I wouldn't know. Telescope and eyeglass lenses used to be made from ground quartz, and glancing at the thread about the agate I see people have made the point about contact lenses. There are some extraordinary lapidaries out there!
