Much like everyone else that entered this year I too really disliked the rocks for the contest. I quit working on them completely for a long period of time and did not plan to send any in. I got an itch this week to at least run them through the lot-o to see if they got any better. I took these pictures after 1000 and burnish. I am on vacation all of next week but may run them in polish for 2 days after that and possibly send some in on the 15th which is the last day possible. Getting them to shine is not an issue but sending in contest rocks with pits and imperfections is hard to come to terms with. This was my only rock with decent character. Looks like maybe a fossil in there? Thanks for looking Chuck

I've been reading all the complaints, but these look pretty great to me. They obviously know that the tumbles won't be perfect.

These look great! That does look like a fossil I'm not sure I'm going to have any done in time Running a few in polish right now

I've been reading all the complaints, but these look pretty great to me. They obviously know that the tumbles won't be perfect. My original plan was just to toss them into Lake Huron next week but these rocks are so bad I am afraid I would get in trouble for polluting or littering. The group shot looks decent but I would not want to post close ups of each rock. Hopefully someone from RTH got some better material. Need to keep the win streak going. I think we are at five years in a row now. Chuck

I can see some pitting but they still look good and if everyone has the same issue you are golden.

Mine look a lot like Chuck’s. They got shiny easily, but the holes went all the way through. Last year, getting them shiny was the problem. I had some rocks that were shiny on one side and dull on the other.

Maybe the contest pieces were chosen that way on purpose just to see what people could do with them. Take away the obvious and likely irreparable pits, etc., those rocks look great; defects on purpose can't be called defects.

They look great to me, although I'm not a good judge of tumbled rocks. Ooooh, shiny, pretty rocks

I have a question, where do you read the rules and find out more about this contest? Do you purchase these rocks or are they sent to you?

I managed to get one rock WITHOUT any pits and when I moved them from the 1000 in the lot-o over to the polish barrel on Saturday, it has some other material (maybe fossil) in several places that look to be cross grain, for the lack of a better word, that didn't polish. That one stone is really pretty to the naked eye, red and yellow banding, almost a tigers eye look. But it has those 2 or three very small rectangle unpolished places.
This is my first run at the contest, so I reread the grading. It states, they will not grade on flaws that are inherent in the material. Only the final polish. So my one pit-less stone won't get sent in because the polish is not perfect. Which is fine by me, because I think it is really pretty.

Can you post a pic of it? I think I'd send it in anyway. Seems like an inherent flaw to me.

Mine were really nasty, On Monday I took them out of the 600 stage washed them up and put them into the polish. I have been trying to get the best out of the material but keep on getting new pits etc opening up just when I think there are about right. They will polish well but lots of flaws. While I am not totally convinced I think I will get five reasonable stones to put in the mail for judging. Lets hope they get there in time as its a long way from NZ to the States.
Cheers Scott
