It really hurts to send off substandard entries when you live as far away as I do.... I mean really hurts... But it's the same for everyone and you got to be in to win.

Looks like you all did your best with the most challenging material there is!!
Much kudos!
When will they announce the winners?

Thanks - They should announce the top three around the 15th of this month at their annual show. Chuck

That's what I was expecting but got no where close to that in my box. Maybe they kept those for themselves and threw everyone the duds

I thought the same thing when I saw that picture. I really hate tumbling most of the contest rocks they've sent me in the four years I've done it. It would be really hard to judge if they sent everyone the rocks in the picture though because many of us would send in perfectly polished rocks.

It would be really hard to judge if they sent everyone the rocks in the picture though because many of us would send in perfectly polished rocks. The last time that happened was the year they sent Brazilan agate. It was some horrible mechanically crushed rough but the end pieces were flawless specimens. I think the obsidian year would have been challenging to judge too. With obsidian I would expect every entry to be 100% pit free and well rounded. The only thing to judge on that material would be the end shine. Chuck

I don't Facebook so this is the first time seeing this pic. I did look up Ramsey agate when it was announced, not a lot of pictures but definitely nothing that resembled that picture. I have said before mine looked like rocks I might find in Indiana, nothing special. Never sent mine in, maybe someone at the upcoming craft show will take a shine to them,ha ha.

No I definitely don't think that it was false advertising. It was an example of the rough that was sent for the Brazilian comp a few years back. You come to expect that competition rough is going to be nasty, very nasty. That way you sort the really good tumblers out from the bad. If you read the rules around the marking schedule these guys don't mark down the presence of natural flaws. So its a case of try your best and see what happens. If you give people beautiful rough then you will never get enough separation for the entries.
Cheers Scott

Their show is this weekend. Have they been announcing the winners before the show the last couple years? Back in the years that I placed the final judging took place at the show by visitors so we did not find out till after. Chuck

I don't think the show goers have any say in the contest. I'm pretty sure they sent me a picture of my rocks on display when I won first place with my name by my rocks. Actually, I think the trophy was on display at the show. So they decided before the show.

Actually, I think the trophy was on display at the show. So they decided before the show. Yep they changed the judging around 2016. Originally the club did their round of technical judging to pick what they thought were the top 5 entries. After that they displayed those 5 entries at their annual show and had visitors judge them on nothing but looks and that determined the top three winners. So it was possibly for the rocks that the club judges thought were first place to not even made the top three if they did not present well. I like the old way better but it was probably more work. Still a lot of silence.... Probably means my entries are not quite good enough...

Still a lot of silence.... Probably means my entries are not quite good enough... I do not think it is possibly for the top three to not include any of the RTH entries. If an RTH member had been told they were top three I think it would have been posted here right away. That logic allows me to hold out hope, lol Chuck
