I read through all 11 pages of the "Instructions for Vibe Tumbling" thread in the tutorial section and there was a very specific recipe for the Lot-O-Tumbler listed. The recipe for the finishing stages are as follows:
1/2 Teaspoon 1000 grit and 1/2-1 teaspoon of soapflakes ----------Run 24-36 Hours
ADD 1/2 teaspoon (each) soapflakes and Tripoli ---------Run 24 hours
ADD 1/2 teaspoon (each) Tin Oxide, soapflakes, and Cerium Oxide -----Run for 48 Hours
My question is regarding the use of Tripoli, TO, and CO; have people switched to the Aluminum Oxide instead of those three? Most grit packs sold come with the AO and since this thread was written in 2010 I was thinking that maybe this is a bit outdated? Or, does the recipe above provide a better finish that just using the AO?
I think this recipe came from Conrocks (Tom) and there were a few posts by him as well as Jack (Yorkshire) on this recipe so I combined what they both wrote below. Let me know if this has changed grit wise or if it's still the go to recipe:
-------------------------
Fill container with water (to cushion rocks ) add rocks fill container up to top, then TIP all water out of container
Then, with the Lot-O switched on (& at each stage following) add 1/2 teaspoon Soap flakes (to help carry the grit around ) and 1 teaspoon Borax. Soap powder/flakes - use 1 teaspoon in all stages. At about 15 minutes to an hour before the load is ready to wash (near the end of that stage), add about 1/2-1 teaspoon more soap flakes with some very hot water (mix the soap and water before adding it so it's all emulsified).
Check the vibe regularly as the grit works, add a few drops of water to keep rocks looking a Glossy Grey (or use a spray bottle with a couple of squirts)
DO NOT add more than a few drops at a time
The recipe is:
From 2nd Stage
6 Teaspoons 220 Grit -------- Run for 48 Hours
Wash Up,
1/2 Teaspoon 400 grit ------- Run 24 hours
Wash up,
1/2 Teaspoon 600 Grit ------- Run 24 hours,
Wash up
Burnishing stage
1 Teaspoon soap flakes 2 teaspoons Borax -------------- run over night 12-18 hours
Wash up, change barrel to polishing barrel at this stage.
From now on NO washing just adding ingredients:
1/2 Teaspoon 1000 grit and 1/2-1 teaspoon of soap flakes ----------Run 24-36 Hours
ADD 1/2 teaspoon (each) soap flakes and Tripoli ---------Run 24 hours
ADD 1/2 teaspoon (each) Tin Oxide, soap flakes, and Cerium Oxide -----Run for 48 Hours
The finish is a very High gloss finish and has to be seen to believed
Wash By Hand in warm water
Thanks
