Diamond Bar, CA Today I'm guessing a fly. It's an Ichneuman wasp. But what kind?Short Tail? Yes. It's a Short Tail Ichneuman wasp of the genus Ophion.

looks like a type of wasp. I've heard them called beneficial wasps. I've seen similar ones that are black. Lynn

“Ichneumon”
I'll take a guess at long tail
Pretty harmless and they eat other insects which is why they are called Beneficial Wasps

Crane flies are a March phenomenon in SoCal. That's an interesting bug too. Adults have no mouth and don't feed.

That’s a cute bug. I’d say short tale, or no tail. Don’t see one.
We call Crane flies GAL NIPPERS, though they have never tried to bite me.

Again, Pat might have the name. InOhio they are gally nippers Turn on the porch light at night and they are all over the place. Kids freak out because fly right at you. Im sure it's a slang term....maybe

Found this centipede last summer under a rock... I was envenomated by one of those. That was quite possibly the worst 18 hours of my life. Certainly at that time it was. Thumb swollen like a gooses egg. Pain from stretched skin and pain components of the venom. I was up all night. Finally fell a sleep at sunrise and was none the worse for wear at lunch time. Those Green Banded Scolependra are really cool beasts. Don't get bit!

Bugs can be cool Billy those Jerusalem Crickets are the most vile thing ever! When I bought my house the yard had easily 1000 of them. I got chickens and haven't seen one now since 20 years. Thank whomever you worship.

Awful!! 1000 would be s nightmare.

I didn't know exactly the species name, there are so many of them...

Just saw this about centipede bites....ow.
Glad you're ok!
Typical Symptoms
At the site of the bite, you can expect:
Two puncture wounds, one from each of the modified leg claws, and Immediate and sometimes radiating pain as well as redness and localized swelling.
Although the pain may last for no more than several hours to a several days - some compare it to a bee sting - you might suffer more serious symptoms, for instance:
Intense itching, local tenderness, headache, swollen lymph glands, dizziness, nausea, palpitations, anxiety and increasing blood pressure, and Local tissue damage.
In addition to the bite, you might also experience small puncture wounds, laced with blister-causing venom, in the tracks where the clawed centipede crawled across your skin.

Yeah it was gnarly.
I was up all night saying, "if it doesn't start getting better in an hour..... ". It wasn't getting worse so I never did the ER thing. It was a weird kinda numb for a few weeks.
0/10 do not recommend.

Considering I used to get $4 each for them, I'd say alls well that ends well.
