No cell structure that I can see. Pretty sure it's wood- on the plus side I like the quartz (?) pattern so I may try tumbling it. Here's another one I cut, both sides. Definite fairburn patterns but also a big hole. Trying to decide if I should cut it and then tumble, or tumble it the way it is. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

It may not stay together if you tumble it. might soak all the cracks with thin superglue and let it set up beefore tumbling. Have you received the macro filters yet? these look like your phone.

Very interesting. It looks like it has some fortification agate in it. Thanks for sharing it.

Thanks for the suggestion! I did get them, haven't had time to play with them yet. It was my phone, I think they lose quality when I resize.

I'd polish the faces, especially since there is that crystal cave.

The hole has tiny crystals in it. I saw that, too My biggest fear on throwing this in the rotary would be losing a big chunk

Mike how big is the 2nd (3rd) one? It's about 2 1/2 to 3 inches across, I'm guessing about 5/8" thick. Pretty decent size.

Here's a picture I took last night and cropped to show the fortification a little better. I never know how the pics will look when I upload them to RTH so hopefully it's decent...

Yes, face polish with Dremel. I use the Dremel for more delicate cabs/rocks. Would hate to see those wonderful crystals disappear in a tumble.

That cut face is awesome. Can't wait to see it finished. If you only have rotary then maybe tumbling would not work. I do not have experience with that. With the vibe tumbler I tumble nodules with cut faces with no issues. The crystal pockets have not suffered at all. I think part of the reason is that my small ceramic pellets get wedged into the pockets right away and protect them. Seems like rotary would work just longer in each stage. 7 days in a vibe tumbler total. Stages: 120/220 for 1 day, 500 for 4 days then polish for 2 days The outsides get shiny but maintain there natural texture. Chuck

When I've used plastic pellets and have rocks in the tumbler with holes (crystal or otherwise), pellets get stuck in the holes also and protect them also. I think a vibe would do best, I may just have to try the dremel for now. I was more concerned with saving the patterns than the crystals but I think now I'd like to save both.

I do not think there is any magic going on in the vibe. Other than saving time and grit I think the same result could be achieved in the rotary for this application. Because stage one is skipped the rock should maintain its shape pretty well. I should add that my saw does not leave any marks and produces about a 400 finish. If a tile saw was used and left you with saw marks then that is a whole different animal. Chuck
