Talk about a broken heart. That's a shame. Oh well, I'm not giving up on making hearts. I still don't know anything about cabbing- I'm guessing this sort of thing happens. Especially when first starting out. I'm hoping I'll learn as I go and get better.

This material looks really soft and obviously hard to work with using conventional methods unless stabilized. If I really liked the piece I would epoxy it to a backer and then stabilize the top, flatten the top and then quartz cap it.

If I really liked the piece I would epoxy it to a backer and then stabilize the top, flatten the top and then quartz cap it. It was going great, then BAM. Thanks for the advice, but in the second pic you can see what's left. I think it's about an inch by a half inch and going in the tumbler to see what happens.

Some things just aren't meant to be. Or maybe this is what the rock wanted? Maybe it will cab nicely after all. Back to the drawing board...

Hope you don't mind a few oldies....
Getting better all the time.
Ouch!
How Can You Mend a Broken Heart - The Bee Gees
As long as you take it for what it is - a learning experience! - it's all good. Keep at it, and you WILL learn what rocks to use, what works, what don't work.
Keep doing and sharing!!

Truer words were never spoken, my friend. Too late for that one, however. It's beyond repair I'm afraid... Thanks for the compliment.

What you ended up with looks like an ancient artifact! Very clever : ) Now you just need a story to go with it.
Nevertheless, I'm sorry it happened this way.

Well, the first order of business is to find someone to blame. I hope you didn't neglect this important step.

I believe that is an ancient Celtic Heartstone, given to those widowed in wars against the barbarian hordes...it could be true. Sorry about your broken heart, Mike. That's a real bummer and a bad feeling when it happens, particularly when things seem to be going well with the rock up to that point.
