I was reading about everybodies dreary weather (Except a few). I didn't think I should add these to that post, so here they are. Tromping about in the hills yesterday I took these. It was a bit chilly at 57 degrees, but the sun was out and it was a great Arizona winter day. Hope you enjoy- The Brains of the outfit... So that is what the weather is like here in Arizona in the winter time- Thanks for looking

Wow, Banjo! Those pics are awesome! Is that your 'backyard' or did you have to travel some to reach that beautiful place? What kind of rocks did you find?

Great shots. I especially enjoy the cactus in May when they and the flowers are in bloom. We were thinking of moving to Arizona. Perhaps when I get tired of Floriduh, I can get some major acreage, build a pyramodule, a 26 footer, dig me a well, and do some serious rocking. I will accept no guests. Trespassers will be violated! Well, certainly encouraged to go the way they came. Purty country dude.

This is about a 1/2 hour drive. I got some thin lace agate. Nothing great other than the excercise and fresh air.

I've been to Arizona several times for a winter escape from snowy Alberta, but nothing can match the feeling of the first time I was there (1988), when I was so struck by the cactus vistas that I literally felt like I was on another planet.
As an aside, on that first trip I bought a touristy pack of saguaro seeds. The seedlings grew very well, but I didn't really have room for them, so last spring I donated the two remaining 16 year old cacti to a local conservatory that features a "Desert Pavillion". In return, they gave me two free family passes to the conservatory, but I must admit that I haven't yet used these to see whether my saguaros made it into the desert pavillion.
Anyway, thanks for the warm (hey, 57 F is warm for many of us this time of year) desert pics, and I hope you score some nice rocks on your winter outings. Everything here is under snow, so I won't be out rockhounding again until April.

Aww that looks so inviting, I want to be a snowbird too! Banjo, thanks for the great pics, the country is so beautiful there, I'd never get any rocks tumbled anyway, I'd be out sightseeing. But then, I think I'd be so worried about snakes I'd forget to look for the rocks.

I've probably seen only 3 rattlers in the 25 years I've been here. One is skinned and all 6 feet of him is hanging on my wall and the other 2 were quick enough to get out of sight. Arizona has a lower rattlesnake bite ratio than most other states and the bites that are recorded are from people being 'Macho' and playing with them. (Not a good idea). The 'brains of the outfit' will ocasionally find some good rocks, I just have to wash them well after he marks them for me. Mostly he is just there, 'cause that's what dogs do' hang out with the Alpha male, (me ;D)

Hey Banjo , thanks very much for showing your little big part of the world. It looks even better than on films I may have seen in the distant past.
Awesome views with those cacti all over and even water in the desert.
;D

Arizona is one of my most favorite places! And those pictures make me want to start packing up the RV and head west. I so want to be in Arizona when the cactus blooms. Been there in early June, but missed the serious blooming. I really, really want that barrel cactus in the second and 5th picture! Those things cost about $150.00 here! And look at that sky! Beautiful! Banjo, what is that plant/cactus? to the left in the first pic. Also, the one behind the barrel cactus in pic #2. That is definitely cool looking! I want it! Great pics Banjo! Hopefully soon I will be able to plan a trip out that way and actually be able to go!! llana

Those are both skeletons. All that remain are the ribs of the saguaro. You even need a special permit to remove those from the desert. I could look into getting one if you like? ;D The permit, that is .

Although I would love to have them, I don't really have any place to put them. Thanks for the offer though. Just dreaming of how cool they would look in my imaginary yard. when my mom and I were in Az in '95, I dug up a few cactus and brought them home. Didn't tell my mom - just loaded them in the trunk of the car with several walmart bags full of Az dirt/sand when she discovered it, she had a fit. Was afraid we were gonna get busted and go to jail. It's probably a good thing I didn't run across one of those big barrel cacti or I sure would have tried to dig it up! She really would have had a fit over that! llana

llana, that's terrible. Your mom was right to be upset. Arizona cacti are getting wiped out by cactus poachers in many areas, that's why they are protected by law. They should be left for everyone to marvel at. If you really need one, go out and buy it from a nursery, don't dig 'em up. If I saw you doing that, sorry, but I'd turn you in.
