I collected this last time I was home. I love to snorkel the mine pits in Crosby, Mn. One has a "island" that has piles of rocks. It comes up from a depth of 25ft on one side and drops off to 75 on the other. You can actually stand/sit on the top of it. I've actually fished off it. I've found 2 pieces of it and this is from a slab I cut off Hope the link works

Wow! Didn’t know it came in anything but red. Thanks! I didnt know this either until I started some research on MEJ. The color comes from the amount of iron, bacteria and oxygen at the time. The weird thing is it still has that MN smell (iron) even though I dont see any red in it

If I remember my mineralogy correctly, there are iron minerals that are green. Digging in to some dim memories but I seem to remember ferric iron is red/orange and ferrous iron shows up as a green mineral. I believe it has to do with the valence/charge on the particular assemblage. Could explain the smell?

I look at the slabs/rocks we have in addition to what I see here and and get to know them by their various features and then bam, someone posts a picture blowing up my idea of what such and such looks like. Will always keep this interesting, that's for sure! Al Check out this one: www.smithsonianmag.com/photocontest/detail/natural-world/mary-ellen-jasper-stromatolite/?ordering=-uploaded_at&filters=

I never noticed it growing up but when I go back home it is so strong to me. Almost every rock from there, especially Lakers smell like it

That's an awesome cab Ali! It's like Gary (green) and Mary Ellen had a baby.
BTW, is that Joe Satriani playing on the video?
