That's an awesome cab of MEJ, Ali! Great job on the video and photos, too. I'm quite jealous.

I didnt know this either until I started some research on MEJ. The color comes from the amount of iron, bacteria and oxygen at the time. The weird thing is it still has that MN smell (iron) even though I dont see any red in it Under the right conditions iron can turn things green as well. Edit: Looks like stonemon already said that... Indian Bloodstone is colored by iron.

Such a great shine on ME. It's really awesome. I saw some pieces that were green and red. Definitely need to search for some of that. I know alot of it comes out of Biwabik. Which is by you right? Do you know if you can snorkel the pit?

Very nice cab . I've been looking for my green MEJ since seeing your post , finally found one . Ah the joys of having almost enough rocks . Do your chunks look sorta like this ?

Do you know if you can snorkel the pit? I have a big piece of green that I will be cutting when I get a new pulley for my 24 inch saw. Don't see green very often but it out there. Biwabik is not to far but never explored that area. I can't snorkel in any pit.

I almost didnt keep them as I just thought green rock, but then I saw those MEJ swirls and did a happy dance

This one is kinda sparse on stromo swirls , has a more agatey look to it .

They just dont want to be found yet. I have to start packing everything up in boxes to mail back home so I'll come across them eventually.

If I remember my mineralogy correctly, there are iron minerals that are green. Digging in to some dim memories but I seem to remember ferric iron is red/orange and ferrous iron shows up as a green mineral. I believe it has to do with the valence/charge on the particular assemblage. Could explain the smell? absolutely correct, common in marine sediments it depicts the oxidation state environment at the time of formation oxidation vs reduction where ferric iron is Fe2O3 and the ferrous is FeO. Not saying green MEJ is common just the process.
