Since my move, I've been going through my stash, and started thinking of starting a cabbers version of 'Roaming Wire'. The idea is make a list of interested people, and send around a box (UPS flat rate small) of little cab sized slabs and one finished cab. When you get the box, you can choose a slabbett (is that a real word?) and cab it to send on. Also, take out rock you want to try, and replace it with something from your stash. Send the box to the next person on the list!
Just seeing if enough people are interested in doing this.
I can send out the first box and cab, and be the contact point. I was thinking of waiting for the New Year, since I'm sure people are busy with the holidays coming up!

I think it's a great idea, but we have the traveling box already and you know how people are- that small flat rate will get awfully BIG.

I think the "make a cab" part of the plan differentiates it fairly well from the travelling rock box. Tela is right the TRB ends up with a million slabs and bags of tumbles and other stuff that doesn't always appeal to me as a cabber - and it usually ends up with talks having to upgrade it to a LFRB. I wonder how bad the flow would stall waiting on people (me! lol) to get off their butts to create a cabochon from it. Also just curious what happens to the box full of cabochons when the game runs it's course? Maybe we could raffle it off to everyone who played?

The same idea is done with cigars and is called a box pass. The idea is that a group of people will have a diverse number of items and it gives a person a chance to try something they normally wouldn't be able to. There are two problems with this approach, paying for shipping every time the box is passed and the box getting stuck somewhere and follow up is frequently needed.
There is a more popular alternative this time of year 'Secret Santa. People who sign up put together a box of goodies and names are drawn at random. This may already haver been done here.

I'd be interested in this too. Whichever way y'all want a run it. But I agree with Julie - take 1 & replace with 1. Pretty simple to keep under control 👍

That's a fun way to do it, make 1,and take a picture of before and after! My original thought was a chance for some to try rock they haven't tried yet, and just replace what you take, so it never gets bigger than a small flat rate box. And sending the finished cab to the next person, because sometimes it's nice to get a cab from another cabber. I certainly still buy my share, even though I cab myself.
Haha, Tela, you can be at near the end of the list, so by then, the weather will have warmed up!

Wait, so you want to send a slabette, then we cab it and send it on to the next person with a new piece of rough? I think what the issue might be is that if you receive a box with only one piece of rough it may be something you've already worked with and it doesn't interest you it isn't fun then, or worth 7$ plus a new piece of rock to play.
If the box starts out with a number of choices then that would be ok, but I do think that people might want to keep the new cab and send a cab of their choosing. Or - we can always talk to the person who comes directly after us and send pics of what is in the box and some choices you can add, and then they know what they're getting. For those of us with a cab stash we can do the same, take a pic of the cab(s) in the box and whatever we have to offer and the next recepient can choose what they want.
Have to remember that some of us are new and can't measure up to the expertise that some of you have making cabs. I'd hate to take an awesome piece and leave a crappy one.

I think you're a little confused, Julie. The box will have several small slabs and 1 cab. The cab is for you. You choose 1 slab to cab for the next recipient & exchange any other slabettes for pieces you have. Basically an even swap. The next person gets a cab & slabettes & repeats the process.

NDK/Nate explained it exactly! I have a bunch set aside already and a few more slabs to break up.
I'll start a new thread after I get back from vacation on the Dec. 18th, and start a list of names there to start it around~ The official shipping date of the first box can be Jan. 1, 2020! I'll take a pic of the slabbetts I choose.
