Etsy now is not the etsy I signed up for. I ain't only about the money. I just plain can't stand etsy.

All that verbiage seems to be coming from a business that will eventually be out of business and left scratching their head wondering what happened. Greed does a lot of companies in. Reminds me of PhotoBucket.

It is SUPPOSED to be MY business. I don't like being forced into ads that I don't want and to pay a fee that I don't agree to... so, I'm leaving. I am sick and tired of them.
I have a stand alone site to put work into and an IG account to make work for me, but honestly, I'm really over selling for awhile. Maybe, I'll pick it up again, but I need a break from the craziness that is etsy.
Back when cabs were sold on ebay, Silverhawk did very well with his auctions and the went to his own site. He had a loyal customer base. I'm not sure his site is still selling cabs; everything shows as sold. You have been on Etsy for quite a while and have some loyal customers. Would it make sense to have a small presence on Etsy just for additional exposure?

Did someone say Damascus Steel? *forge heating intensifies* oh... More related to the thread. They didn't till the field, sow the seeds, pull the weeds, water the plants, harvest the grain, mill the flour, make the dough, or bake the bread, but they sure want to eat it!

First some disclosures...
1) I'm a relative newcomer to Etsy - I started selling in 2014 so I really can't protest from any 'historical' perspective - I never experienced the old Etsy. To me Etsy has always been a convenience sales platform that I like and enjoy a whole hell of a lot more than the only other sales platform I've used, Ebay. 2) my Etsy sales dropped to an all-time low (well under the $10k 'mandatory' number) in the last year and thus I am only barely marginally affected by this change. 3) I didn't even know Etsy was subsidizing any "off site" advertising for me. This was a big surprise to me. 4) I'm am not aware of even a single sale that I've ever had that originated from "off site." 5) With my current job situation and physical cab making limitations I don't see myself making new inventory at a rate that could raise my sales above $10k and thus be affected by this any time soon.
So my feeling is to just sit tight and see how things fall into place. Based on my sales appearing to be 100% Etsy website driven I doubt I'll pay the 15% advertising fee on any sold items anytime soon.
Hopefully without detracting from the importance of the changes and how they affect others here financially and emotionally, I kinda mostly agree with these comments that were posted in the Etsy forum:

Because I believe using this site is my choice.
Exactly.

I hope I didn't come across as a dick in my post - I definitely wasn't directing that at you. I just see Etsy as a useful tool to get a job done and until I get a better tool that won't cost a bunch of time and money to launch I'm pretty much standing pat. I know you've been unhappy with Etsy for a long time and you have every right to tell them to eff off.

I got an email from Etsy with a link to this screen. What is interesting is the incorrect and confusing information. Etsy says 2 sales and there was only 1. The one that was clicked on Google was an item I put together for a buyer who hasn't bought, but I just left it out there. The screen also said that I was charged 15% for the sale and then the charge was waived. I understand why it was waived but why say I was charged. The good news is that someone found my shop, I made a sale and it didn't cost anything extra.

Have you folks ever considered doing a co-op site for selling cut stones? Once the initial costs of such a site like that being setup is completed, keeping it online shouldn't be too expensive. Keep it limited and quality controlled and I could imagine the potential to grow exposure without costly advertising could be done with properly labeled photos of cut stones that would appear in the searches for images on Google, Pinterest, Instagram, etc.. Just typing off the cuff here but it may be something to think about.

Exposure is always going to be an issue. The only alternative to Etsy would be facebook.

I got an email from Etsy giving my stats for off site ads for the last 30 days. For the year, they represented 2% of visits and 1% of revenue. The item that brought a buyer to my shop was 4 Blue Biggs Cabochons for $200. The item was created for a particular buyer who changed their mind. That item brings more traffic to my store (which is not much) than any other listing. The next time I make a sale of another item off that one and half to pay extra fees, I'll deactivate it. Any traffic to my shop that costs nothing is ok. Considering how much Etsy is touting this feature, I have seen no significant benefit.

I tend not to sell a lot on Etsy so am under the "radar" for now. I did start trying to set up a shop on a new selling platform that is in Beta right now. It's called GoImagine. I don't have a lot of listings up yet but I'm hoping it will be better than Etsy in the long run. For now there is a learning curve for setting up shop and they are working the bugs out.

In December 2019 I got fed up with Etsy and moved my entire inventory over to a online store on my own dedicated website. I feared that the loss of traffic would hurt be but.... I am doing SO MUCH BETTER in sales now that I am off Etsy! And I get many more repeat buyers. And I don't run any Google Ads or anything.
If you are hesitant to leave Etsy and start your own site - just do it! The initial start up of your own website will be some time and effort, but it was totally worth it for me!

I understand getting more repeat buyers. How do first time customers find your site without knowing the name? I tried doing a bing and google search on descriptions of your items and the results were mainly etsy and ebay.

Good to know about Etsy; was considering it for extra income but think I'll be passing. Doesn't seem like it has enough perks for me since I already run my site and have full control.

The main perk seems to be millions of eyeballs brought to the page with national (worldwide?) advertising. The problem is they can't stop messing with it and the search function has become some convoluted mess (like a google search algorythm) that noone can figure out anymore.

There is a lot I don't like about etsy...... A LOT, but Tommy is right. The traffic can't be beat! That's the best thing about it, but you still have to compete to be seen.
