This afternoon I completed my last work order, the first time that has happened since I started with this employer 3.5 years ago. They are offering voluntary layoffs, if we want the unemployment but that’s not gonna sail this boat. I’m sure many of us are in the same situation. Rumors are we are headed for an Italy style lockdown. Even those retired with a nest egg have likely seen that egg shrink drastically over the last few weeks. Kids are home from school indefinitely. This is now affecting everyone. The people in grocery and medical are gonna be super busy but the rest of us..........

Yep, the loss of life is going to be tragic, but I fear the real difficulty is on the other side of the sickness. It's definitely the time for everyone to come together and help each other...well, outside of a 6' safety boundary

I still think (hope) that this is all overkill

I'm retired but my nest egg is rather small. I take the mandatory distribution and I expect those funds will recover at some point. I'm on lockdown but am allowed to shop for groceries. I'm almost a hermit and most of my interactions and shopping is done on line. Amazon and Costco have slower than usual delivery. I feel sorry for those whose jobs depend on social interaction; restaurants, bars, theaters etc. I also feel sorry for children that are missing school and their parents needing to spend more time for their care. The damage to the economy has the potential of hurting almost everyone. Throwing a lot of money at the problem will have consequences.

I do service work at businesses. I’ve heard mothers say... well, I won’t say what they said, it wouldn’t fly here, but they are NOT enthused about being stuck home with the kiddos during this time.
I’m trying for an optimistic view, someday we can all look back and talk about the great toilet paper war of 2020.

We will all get through this -- maybe a little worse for wear, but we will survive. I read today that they are trying a drug that is used to treat malaria and some other stuff to treat COVID-19. Some French doctors tested it on a small group and it was pretty successful at curing positive cases. In 6 days those people were testing negative. Trump told the FDA to ok that drug for use immediately.
With almost everybody staying home as much as possible and avoiding other people (except for the a$$hole kids in Florida on spring break), I'm hopeful that this won't last quite as long as the doomsayers predicted.

I’d bet good money that the kids are not going back to school until August.

I’d bet good money that the kids are not going back to school until August. Probably should have said that better. By kids I meant college students.
Some beaches are closed and they're ignoring the restrictions with no thought about what their actions could bring. Just caring about partying their brains out. Generally, I don't care what they want to do to hurt themselves, but the circumstances are way different this time.

Even the mom & pop stores are very low on supplies. My dad is selling bulk honey as fast as he can get it into buckets and jars. Everyone is in survival mode. Just the quiet sound of carts in Walmart, no happy chatter. The toilet paper aisle looks like industrial shelving for sale. It’s like nothing I’ve seen before.

Our local U just cancelled in person classes for the rest of the semester. I am betting the governor does the same for K-12 and daycares. They haven’t yet though. Right now just through the end of March.

I don't remember seeing anything quite this bad, either (and I'm getting old). Then again, back when the other outbreaks happened we didn't have news agencies making everything political or social media spreading BS everywhere.

Sy Syms he ain’t : ) The Trump administration is asking state labor officials to delay releasing the precise number of unemployment claims they are fielding, an indication of how uneasy policymakers are about further roiling a stock market already plunging in response to the coronavirus outbreak.
In an email sent Wednesday, the Labor Department instructed state officials to only “provide information using generalities to describe claims levels (very high, large increase)” until the department releases the total number of national claims next Thursday.
The email, which was shared with The New York Times, noted that the reports were monitored closely by financial markets and should therefore remain embargoed. “States should not provide numeric values to the public,” wrote Gay Gilbert, the administrator of the department’s Office of Employment Insurance.

My wife and I both got laid off our jobs on Monday and Napa County is imposing the shelter in place as of midnight tonight. Overall we're doing OK - keeping our spirits up. We managed a major stock up on food (and dog food) last week before things got really weird and now all we can do is to ride it out. Were also fine on toilet paper for a few weeks but we will run out of paper towels in a week or so My perspective is ... at least we have dogs and not small children to deal with at home

IF the Malaria medicine they are looking to use for COVID-19 is as effective as tested, you can likely consider this a closed deal and look at how we're going to move forward with economic recovery. It is a big IF, but the news media (all of it, I don't care which network or political leaning) is still in "there's still time to panic!" mode. Many people I have spoken to don't even know about the Hydroxychloroquin (and even fewer know about the 500billion strong swarm of locusts that have been eating everything in eastern Africa all the way up to parts of Asia, but that's a different topic). If the medicine is as effective as they say, the bottle neck will likely be testing kits, as it is apparently an anti-viral*, not a vaccine. Meaning that if you don't *have* COVID-19, it's pointless to get a shot of Hydroxychloroquin.
*yes, I know, calling it an anti-viral seems to be a misnomer because for the most part we can't treat a virus like we can a bacteria, but apparently this stuff is the exception.

It sounds like all of California is on lock-down now anyhow. I hope everyone on here will let the rest of the board know if they need anything - be that a material object, some temporary assistance, or whatever else.
