I have some various slabs/slabettes of Indian paint stone, to me it’s full of heavenly beauty, but no earthly good. It’s so soft. I see in 2017 rockjunquie managed to polish a cab to a soft shine, but good grief... What is this stone used for? Maybe intarsia and carving? Sounds like it’s no longer mined, and from the death valley region.

Would the paintstone pendants scratch easily?

It's cool stuff. Most people don't care if it takes a good shine or not. The patterns in the stone are enough to pull it off without a shine.
Pendants are fine for it. Pendants don't normally have a lot of opportunities to get scratched.

Thank you, that makes sense. Seems quite chalky but apparently it doesn’t stain or shed dirt everywhere

I wonder if anyone has had some level of polishing success with IPS using Zam. I use Zam for jade but have never cut IPS.

opalpyrexia, tried Zam, no cigar. The material's too soft to take a real polish. But I like it a lot and agree that the patterns are so striking it has an appeal of its own without a high shine.

Well a big thanks to all who replied. I had previously done preforms and tried them in the loto but it just mucked and malformed... Had another go, 80 hard, then 1000 sanding wheel, then a short buff by hand with AO polish paste. The black (hematite?) shines more, and whatever is next to it wants to undercut. Thanks for looking at try #1.

Had a little helper. He loves to switch the lights on and off. Dang, Evan, he's a cutie patootie! Aren't you afraid he's gonna turn the machine on and hurt himself?

Thanks Robin! Yes always need to watch the young’uns... In this case the switch is out of reach for him as he is the cautious type.
His older bro (4) knows how to get it going. He cut up some low grade slabs on the trim saw yesterday (with supervision). He loves the sensory.... the vibrations, the sound, the water flying, and the force he puts on the rock, the sudden finish.... so fun to watch him totally loving it. He respects the blade though!

Continuous rim should be pretty child safe. Not like those tuck point blades the other day. Ouchie
