You are doing a marvelous job in the true sense of a purist. Mexican crazy lace can have major differences in hard/soft spots, and by asking the tumbling to do the major shaping, you are exposing those weakest spots to damage/fracturing. I'm sure that some adhesives applied in the deepest fractures or cracks (when they were dry) would have strengthen the stone and potentially prevented some of the breakoffs. Yes a lapidary cab machine could have reduced the time, reduced the risk, and allowed you more control over shape but that would not have been tumbling. A stone like this once polished and smoothed to your satisfaction can be an endless source of pleasure as it is contemplated from every possible angle and repeatedly gives a different impression. Looking at the outside and imagining what is yet to be seen inside. Right on.

I'm back after being out of commission for a bit. I wore a hole in the barrel lid gasket and they are back ordered everywhere. I ended up finding a QT66 barrel (which I planned on buying sooner or later) and I stole the gasket from that. After getting the barrel rolling again I ended up being away from home for about a month so it was just left tumbling. Now here we are. The latest weigh in puts it at 230 grams for a running mass loss of about 52%! There's still some lines and crevices I need to accept will not tumble out so I'm finally moving it on to my vibe for polish. I originally figured this would be the first rock I'd tumble through final polish in the rotary in a long time time. It turns out it shrunk enough I can squeeze it in the Lot-O. Also a vug with some druse appeared! We're on the home stretch now.

What a gorgeous stone!
With over 50% loss in mass, looking back, do you wish you would've shaped it by hand prior to tumbling, or do you think the results would have been about the same?
