That's a pretty interesting one RWA3006. Do you see that coloration very much? Not so much with the pink but the gold patterns are not rare and I have noticed there are a number of "families" of common variations. I'll dig up a few photos to illustrate the idea...

Thanks! I think the pinkish and gold threw me off on that original cut. Very cool

Perhaps changed to an iron improved diet?

Here is an unusual coprolite. Not only is the color and contrast strange, the exterior merits study. It's possible that some sort of fungi grew on the exterior and then fossilized, or maybe that's just all turd sitting there. What do you think?

I see where you're getting the idea of a fungus-type growth on the exterior. I wonder...how would that fungi stayed "intact" over the millennia so it maintained the look it does...?

I know that some fungi is quite woody and could have been just as durable as the turd. A burial event like a flood could have put it in the vault so it would lay there undisturbed till fossilization. I think most of the coprolites I find were buried which preserved their features so well. I lean towards this hypothesis because of vast quantities of pet wood I've found in Wyoming that are severely encased in algae.

I wasn't thinking of a "sudden event" happening which would have immediately buried them and preserved the shape. It brings to mind the people "preserved" from the Mt. Vesuvius eruption in Pompeii.

What would you say is the craziest thing you’ve found to date in coprolite?
