Thanks. That cleared up my question and any other questions I may have had! Excellent information  There are other bits of evidence within these guys that they are actually fossil poo. Some of the most compelling is when you cut one in half it's not uncommon to find cross sections of undigested twigs, etc that are identifiable. I've found quite a few tree branches about the diameter of my finger and I can even count the rings in them if the cut is perpendicular to the axis of the twig. Man that is really neat! I have no idea why this whole topic is so interesting to me. Perhaps the level of your knowledge and scope of your collection. This is an excellent thread, and I'm sure we can all chuckle about what we are talking about in such detail!

In recent years I've become very selective what I'll pick up and take home because I'm looking mostly for top specimen quality, not cutting rough. I'd say I only take about 2% of what I find. |

LOL, well ok. So far I've been tentative to do so because I don't want to send Eric into a seizure.  As I began to acquire more than I had time to cut I had to figure out a way to store them. When I cut them I keep the best 2% for my personal collection and then I dispose of the others by selling, trading, etc. Many of these end up in rock and tourist shops to sell as novelties. I cut a length of 42" field fence and make a cylinder by hooking the ends together. Then I stand them in the orchard and fill em up with rocks. |

At first I was apprehensive that the neighbors would not like the appearance, but as time went by I was amazed at how many people stop and comment how cool they think it looks. I even had a lady and her daughter ask if the girl could have engagement photos taken among the stone pillars. That blew my mind.

People taking evening walks often ask me what these pillars are and I'm hesitant to tell them what they really are so I just say I like them and store them for future projects.(truth) Lately I've taken to telling horrible bald faced lies to some of the folks I already have a sporting rapport with. ie. "they are beacons for extraterrestrial visitors" "they are seismic stabilizers to minimize damage in the next earthquake" "they are water purifying prototypes"

Wow! Are you shitting me? All of those are full of coprolites?? Double WOW!!! Bet that took a few years to collect... Very awesome, but I doubt I would want wedding photos in front of them, no disrespect intended. You are right, you need to keep what it is on the TP, I mean QT. |
