RickB and amygdule You guys had posted pics of worm colonies. I find a lot of this material out here at Railroad Buttes. Usually I find it with the tubes empty, but this last time I found a piece with what looks like a quartz material in the tubes. Do you guys think this material is worm colony? The first pic shows a typical example I find with the empty tubes. The other pics are of the newest piece. It’s an Abby-normal brain.

I think it's some kind of coral -- but what do I know?

The first piece could be some kind of critter colony. Interesting The second and third pictures look like Teredo Wood, which is the state fossil for North DakotaAlso known as Shipworms, the Teredo are actually little bi-valves with worm like bodies that bore through wood using their tiny shells like a set of jaws. It's pretty common here on the Oregon Coast, where you can find big boulders of it weighing 100's of pounds. Here's a couple of pictures of a boulder that's about 25 million years old.

I even know your tag is with the "64"...and it wasn't even that late at night when I posted it, so I don't even have a good excuse! LOL Those are some amazing boulders! Thanks for posting those. I don't think the matrix on the stuff I'm finding resembles any kind of pet wood. It probably is some kind of sponge. It's really interesting that the "filler" on the holes in the last one really does resemble white chalcedony like in the Teredo Wood link you posted!

The 5th picture looks like a snake head.

Thanks James! It was total LUCK...but I'll take it! Oh dang, that's a sweet one! I haven't found many with those colors... Did you do a little dance?
Thanks Mike! I was frozen in my boots and couldn't move for at least five minutes! LOL - I just remember I kept saying out loud "Oh my God!" over and over! So, this is the second one that I've found out at Railroad Buttes with these same colors on them. The first one I found deep out in the west buttes...this one was way far out in the east buttes. Just kind of weird nearly identical colors to the two with them being found so far from each other!

Nice find jason! What a gorgeous stone! Thank you so much! I'd have to say this is one of the best I've found. Just the amount of fortifications on every single side to this one, puts it right there at the top of the list. The 5th picture looks like a snake head. LOL - You're right! I see that!

Oh, wow! That is a prize find. Congratulations. What is getting demoted so that that beauty can be properly displayed?

Oh, wow! That is a prize find. Congratulations. What is getting demoted so that that beauty can be properly displayed? Thanks Stephan! It's a full linear shift of all but one or two! LOL It hasn't made it to the "display" shelf yet...it's still on the kitchen counter completely in the way - just as it should be! LOL

I thought I had already commented, but I must have been at a loss for words when I saw those pics. That one is incredible! It well deserved the kitchen counter position of honor.
(And yes, I have rocks sitting on the counter, too, much to my wife’s dismay.)
