My brother in law just received his Teaching Certificate and will start teaching this year. I decided to make him a little gift out of two things he realy likes.... Pho

You know, I like that. I bet he keeps it for a long time. The pet wood looks great.

Pho, Super job! I just ordered a couple of diamond core bits...my wife had her eye on some (oval) ocean rocks that a local artisan had cut one side flat and drilled a candle hole in the other...will try to do some myself! csroc

i've seen those, csroc, please keep us advised on your progress. i've eyed the core drills but haven't bought one yet. presumably you need to keep that underwater when you drill? Pho, how did you keep your pet wood secured while you drilled it? what type of water bath did you use?

KD...I used normal clean water....with the level just over the top of the rock. I drilled the hole one and one quarter inch deep. NOTE OF CAUTION : When you are using the core bits, be sure you stop drilling and clear the material out of the bit before it bottoms out. I ruined one bit because I forgot that the material is going up inside the bit as you drill....and it will only go so far....so be sure to stop and clear the bit!!!! One lesson learned..... I also had to use the bits in my regular bench drill press as the shank is too big for a dremel. Just take you time and let the bit do the work..not too much pressure.

oops KD...I just held the pet wood with my hand as it was big enough for me to do that. I put the pet wood in a gladware container, put in just enough water to cover the top of the pet wood...it will get very cloudy during drilling...in my case I had to dump and replace the water twice....

what size core drill did you use, Pho....i'm guessing 3/8"? the candlestick holders holes i've seen are considerably larger than that. you said you got your bits on eBay?
did you just clean your piece of pet wood or did you seal it with something?
great job, i'm sure your brother-in-law will really like it. he can enthuse young rockhounds with it.

KD...I did nothing other than wash the pet wood with a good stiff bruch..did not put any sealer on it at all. The zise of the core bit I used was just slightly larget than a #2 pencil. You can find the bits on ebay. cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6545105302&category=4843&rd=1That ebay link will help you find the bits. I order two different size sets from this user. He was very fast in getting them to me. Pho

Ok, Pho, consider this another idea stolen. I have a great specimen rock I found in the river that I wanted to make into a paper wieght/pen holder for my brother in law for Christmas. Now I know what to do! Great job!

I consider that a compliment cookie...use any of my ideas any time ya want to. I often use others ideas and put several together to come up with something. Besides..I get a lot of ideas from these boards too..

Wow, that is so nice, you did a beautiful job. Now you just need a nice brass plate on the other side with his name on it for his desk. That's something he'll always treasure.
