The preforming has begun. I could not convince myself to make this one smaller, so it looks like it will be a belt buckle, just shy of 2x3" IMG_20201005_192910 by nik1924, on Flickr
Drop the mic and casually exit... I agree this should not be any smaller. Can't wit to see the resulting cab.

Does wave dolomite count as a jasper? I think it's technically closer to marble and softer than jasper is said to be - but with all the ambiguity surrounding common names I see a lot of materials called jasper when they probably aren't. In other words I personally wont get hung up on it - enter it if you've got it.

Good luck finding a commonly agreed upon definition of jasper. I just did a quick survey of my reference texts and can't find any two that totally agree. In addition rockhounds and marketers name practically anything "jasper" that doesn't fit any obvious niches. They agree that jasper isn't banded vs. the technical definition of agate (banded chalcedony). Both are cryptocrystalline quartz and confusingly often occur in the same specimen (jasp-agate). The main difference appears to be whether they are transparent, translucent or opaque. Most agree that jasper is opaque while chalcedony (Indian bloodstone, carnelian, blue chalcedony, sard, chrysoprase etc.) as well as agates are translucent and unbanded. In my unsolicited opinion I think the contest should be open to any material that's generally called or marketed as "jasper" even though many of those stones don't technically fit into the above categories. This is why geology was/is so confusing to me. Even the experts can't agree. I remember when I took a college course and the professor passed specimens around the class and all I could think "They all look the same to me!" and trying to match them to the book based on the descriptions. I'm just going to keep with my ignorance and pick up the pretty stuff!

Can Tahoma be considered a jasper for this contest? When I first bought it as a jasper. When I search for it now, my primary search term is Tahoma agate which also produces results as a jasper. I guess it could be called a jasper agate. When I list, I call it Tahoma.

Not a very scientific approach but I would tend to lean towards the inclusive side because a search for Tahoma Jasper does produce results.

Rim Jasper I think and then to complicate matters, I heard that depends where exactly it was collected.

As you grind through the white/cream layer, magic happens.

You have set the bar high indeed. I have a rare Sunday off so as soon as the Raiders are done losing ( lol ) I'm going to get mine started. I've narrowed it down to roughly ten preforms haha
