this stuff was very soft, but took a nice shine, the mounting i got at Kingsley North, the first pic is for scale and the other two are to show off the stone: i have a few more pieces of this but wanted to practice on a small piece before i attempted one of the nicer stones. thanks for looking! KD

Very, very pretty, great shine and color. Great job! Is it more difficult to work with smaller stones?

smaller stones are harder for me to dop properly and i have to keep reminding myself how close my "nose to the grindstone" ratio really is (yeowch)...but ther than that, they are quicker to finish.
this material is really beautiful stuff, i was nervous to try it but couldn't wait, you know what i mean?

Looks great KD. The first time I tried to grind a stone to fit in a pre-made pendant, I went a little too far and had to start over with a fresh stone. Nice looking stone. Expensive?

i won a moderately sized (3" x 3") slab of that Rhondo-stuff off eBay for about $15 (including shipping). it was a gorgeous piece and i just admired the sucker for a while. but my curiousity got the better of me and i just had to cab that puppy. i have one or two larger pieces with some green and white banding and a bunch of off cuts that are just pink. but i wanted to practice on a few before i attempted the really chioce pieces.
Kim, the templates i have match the corresponding sizes of mountings you can buy (yes, Alice, it is a prefab mounting that i got from Kingsley North), so it's just a matter of grinding it down to the outline and then when you get close, you just keep checking the stone against the mounting til it fits, then proceed to the polishing stages.
i haven't given up on creating my own settings, but these prefabs are just so quick and easy, they will make nice presents and maybe move more stones to sell. save the really cool odd shaped stones for the more labor intensive slver settings.
thanks for all your praise!

I bought some of mine on ebay. I think this is a better deal from Houston Gem and Mineral Society. You can get 3 different ones for $13 bucks! They are HGMS lapidary cabochon templates. These are the ones I am going to get. Where did you get your premade jewelry? Neat idea and what a time saver too!

Bumping this up for Kim to see. This was the post I was talking about Kim. I think the price is pretty cheap and you can get 3 different templates with different size shapes.

Thats really nice KD, I think i'll jump on Kingsley's site and get some of those settings. How was the setting to work with? Any problems? Fire Mountain, and Altamont's settings break very easily, you don't get a second chance at setting the stone.

since i am new to this pre fab mounting thing, i don't know how to answer that....i have a bezel tool and a burnishing tool as well and didn't have a real problem pushing the prongs over. i haven't tried Fire Mountains stuff, but i did order some more from Rio.
thanks,

debs i'm looking everywhere for this post lol. i have a set of 3 metal templates but i like the different shapes on these. printed out the form so i can get them. thanks.
lmao kd. if you turn the templates over the sizes are on them. now how is i have never looked on those sides. i was just fixing to ask you if yours had sizes on them. what is the ruler for at the bottom and why are some of the circles listed as "penny, dime, quarter, etc". where is it you get the catalog for the settings?

kim, go to www.riogrande.com and request a catalog. they cost 10 bucks but you get that as credit with your first order. once you have a catalog you can order online. Rio is a little pricey but they have the best selection that i have found so far. KD

hahaha, KD - I walked into Rio Grande the other day and just "picked up" 2 catalogs. They had them sitting out on tables. (I wasn't aware I had to pay for them...oops!) They actually have 2 catalogs about the size of phone books...a Tools and Equipment catalog, and one for Gems and Findings. I ordered a bunch of sterling and goldfilled wire from them. They have some great stuff! ;D Susan
