So for the last week or so I've been researching on how to build my own flat lap. There's so much information out there and I thought it would be a fun project. Well, last night I was talking with my wife about a couple ideas I had. One was to try and convert an older Wen Wet Stone my dad had given me to see if I could use it on some lapidary project. It turns out the motor isn't strong enough. Another idea was to turn the 7" tile saw on its side and replace the blade with 6" flat lap blades. I said that one might be a little more dangerous, but if I'm real careful I could make it work... Or...I was looking at "this" online. I told her tt would obviously be a little more costly than the homemade stuff, so I'd probably just figure out how to redneck engineer something and make it work. She looked at me and said "Just get it!" Oddly, I didn't have selective hearing on that and didn't have to ask her to repeat herself! So, off to The Rock Shed this morning! Now I just have to figure out how to use it! Hi-Tech 8" Slant Cabber! I got an additional 3000 grit disk to go with the 4 other smoothing disks as the others maxed out at 1200 grit. Now I'm going to have to start purchasing slabs...as I only have the tile/trim saw. Hmmm...unless I can figure out how to talk her into me needing a bigger rock saw! (I better wait another month or so before I try that one! LOL)

Your tile saw should be fine for cutting smaller rocks for cabbing. Or let your selective hearing kick in and back to The Shed for more toys. ;-)

Congrats on the purchase, Jason! Do what MsAli suggested and get the rubber pads to cushion the cutting disc. It really helps avoid "faceted" domes with the cushioning.

Awesome! That is what I 1st bought myself and I still use it. Make sure you get the pads for underneath. Trust me, you'll want them I almost sent you a message last night! I was perusing old threads looking for input on the Slant Cabber and I saw you had mentioned having one. So here's where I'm stuck. I had them on my "to get" list, but Sean didn't have any in stock at The Rock Shed. He said he'd give me a call as soon as he gets some in. I don't want to apply the discs to the backing plates now and then try and remove them once the pads come in...which means I can't use it, except for using the 180 diamond lap. Arghhhh. To have a new "toy" but not be able to use it! I suppose I could just get the first step done on a bunch of cabs and have them ready to go for the next steps... Thanks for the advice...it was on my radar. Your tile saw should be fine for cutting smaller rocks for cabbing. Or let your selective hearing kick in and back to The Shed for more toys. ;-) I'm thinking selective amnesia will set in...just in case she said "curb it" for awhile... Right on Jase that reall nice gift/machine keep ya rocking for a long time I've never used one guess you'll be dopping a lot ? so I'm looking forward to commenting and progress Ed Thanks Ed! I've got three cabs dopped up right now. I've never trued making a cab with a dop, so it'll be a new experience with that along with this machine! Sweet! I've said it before and I'll say it again... You're a great salesman! miket - I posted this reply, then reliazed my computer skipped over your post! (I blame the computer!) Thanks Mike! I was telling my mother about "how" this happened and she called me a Silver-Tongued Devil!!! I like how you put it better! LOL Congrats! Hell yeah, that flat lap will get you where you want to be- cabbing. Go be nice to your wife now. Right?!?! Thanks Tela! I'd do just about anything for my wife...with the exception of watching Lifetime movies with her! (I have to draw the line somewhere! LOL) Congrats on the purchase, Jason! Do what MsAli suggested and get the rubber pads to cushion the cutting disc. It really helps avoid "faceted" domes with the cushioning. Thanks Robin! I will...I just have to stop staring at the machine until those get here! LOL

that machine really cool Jason & dopping a good a good habit to get into Really can rotate the stone smoothly on the lap using super glue ? Thanks Ed! I'm using super glue gel. I had some door hinge pins that were leftover from the house project this summer. They're a little wider at the base than most nails. I have two stones dopped on those. I have another stone dopped onto a 6" 80d nail. If I don't like the feel of those, I'll move to a wooden dowel and try that. I just wanted to see about using the metal dop "stick" first as it'll be easier to get the stone off using a heat source on the metal.
Check to see if they have them in stock.
Robin, thanks so much for looking those up! Sean (The Rock Shed) said he'd get them ordered and call me as soon as they're in...they're "local" to me, so I'd rather give him the business...plus this now gives me another excuse to make a trip back up there. Darn it! He's got a piece of rough in one of the bins outside labeled "miscellaneous" and I swear it's Picture Jasper of some kind (which I could be totally wrong!). But, if it's still there when the pads get in, I'm going to snag it.

Roofing nail on a wine cork. Metal for easy removal from super glue, good handle for the hands and yes the point of the nail is buried in cork, not your hand.
