I stayed up until 12:30 last night (this morning) finishing up this cab. I received the smoothing disks for the slant cabber in the mail yesterday afternoon, so naturally I had to put them together and make a cab last night! LOL The Blue Dream Jasper is courtesy of Tommy from last month's grab bag for the contest. Thank you Tommy! I am super happy with the shape, girdle, dome, and polish on this one. I was concerned about how complex the shape was going to be, but I think I figured it out. There's one small brown spot that barely undercut during sanding. Darn it. I knew it was going to be cloudy with 50mph winds today, thus pics outside weren't going to happen. So, I finally built a light box this morning. It was fun! I'd like to get some brighter bulbs than the 60 watt bulbs in there. I only used the halogen light for the stand. LOL The last pic was taken with the light box in the kitchen with natural sunlight when there was a break in the clouds... Any critiques are very welcomed...it's how I get better...thanks for looking.

Your cab came out very nice! I see you did "dip" just a little on the corners, but no biggie. You're learning.
I used a light tent like that for years. Honestly, I think I got better pics that with the fancy one I have now. If you have manual white balance on your camera. Learn how to use it. It will really help. Also, you aren't breaking any rules by adjusting for more brightness.

Gratz on a great cab...I like your idea of a light box...may DIY one for future batches.. I like that last picture, the Stone really drew me in

I've gotta figure out not to do that...I'm guessing just paying more attention when working the angles. Thanks for catching that. I have no idea what all the "gadgets" do when it comes to all the filters. I just messed with the white balance and will post a pic in a moment from my phone. Thanks for the suggestion. It DOES make it look better! Gratz on a great cab...I like your idea of a light box...may DIY one for future batches.. I like that last picture, the Stone really drew me in Thanks Rocket! I was watching a movie while putting this together, so it took a bit longer than it should have - LOL. I saw a DIY on the internet and figured it looked easy enough. I love the looks of the "infinity" background you can get with these.

Good job!! While balance is your friend. 😀 Thanks Pat! That's the SECOND thing I've learned today...I might be overdoing it on the "increasing my knowledge base" for one day...I better watch some reality TV in order to bring my IQ level back down a bit! LOL

Nice job, Jason! Why don't you just pick one of the harder shapes to start with, like one with 6 corners?
You did really good with all those corners.

Thanks Robin! I thought it might be a little complicated. I really had to think about how to do this before putting stone to wheel! LOL - Tela was right that I "dipped" the corners. I need to think about it and figure out what exactly made me do this - besides not paying enough attention. My wife has claimed a piece of Lapis someone awesome gave me, and I chose to cut it into this shape awhile back...so this was the "practice" piece so I would feel a little more confident on not messing up that Lapis! LOL

One of my "tricks" for corners is to do them last and then use a finer grit wheel to cut them in. I still dip them on occasion when I forget they're there.

I did do them last, but didn't think to do it with the finer grit. I did it in the first phase on the grinding wheel. That makes sense to leave it for the 325 disk!

well jason you been up to all kinds of mischievousness those angle edges ride true smooth dome did you get your polishing pads yet? Thanks Ed! I did get them! Whoot Whoot! This was my first cab with the polishing pads! What a HUGE time-saver compared to doing them with the dremel! LOL I've got serious vibration with the 1200 grit pad (none of the others). Both the pad and the sanding disk are centered on the backing, so I'm not sure why I'd be getting such a vibration with that one. It seemed to be less near the center of the disk and greater closer to the edge. Hmmm...Now that I'm posting this, I'm wondering if I just didn't have the screw holding the wheel on the arbor tight enough...that would make sense as to why a greater vibration at the perimeter...

not sure why either jase
my leather felt back polishing pad on the Pixie does the same
wobbly on the rim smooth in the center
I'm not sure how much of an effect it has ? altho smooth and true is always better
are you off the dop?

No, I've been dopping (not doping - dopping! LOL). I tried to do it without the cab being dopped, and lost half my fingernails and skin on some of my knuckles! Trying to maneuver the cab at the correct angle on the slant cab puts my fingers right on the disk...so I'm sticking with dops to save on band-aids! LOL

that good jase dopping is good !
wish I would take the time altho my fingers are still pretty nimble lucky with that
I have a heart I'll be posting where some fine scrtches appeared and of course filled with polishing compound the photo doesn't lie
dopping would solve some of those issue
so dop on looking good those edges r right on

I've been trying to think how I can do a heart on this slant cabber. With the inside angle at the top of the heart, the only way I can think to get into that angle would be to remove the splash guard around the wheel so I could access the edge of the disk...and I really don't want to take off that splash guard...not because OSHA would have cardiac failure, but because I don't want to clean up the mess of water! LOL I think I could do the top portion of the heart with my dremel...something to look into for the future...definitely not in the immediate future! My sister-in-law has some wax and a wax warmer she's going to let me use, but I like the super glue gel. I've been using old pins from door hinges that I had replaced, and I like them. I just got some wooden dop sticks, so I will give the wax and wood a try later this week probably...

Nice work! And no worries. I still tend to dip corners (did it on a few, just this past weekend), and then grumble and have to adjust. A lot of stuff to keep track of when doming a complex shape

Good thing about that is you can fix it by re-shaping the outside edge and make a smaller cab

A lot of stuff to keep track of when doming a complex shape Thanks Stephan! This one was pretty fun to do due (I said doo-doo LOL) to the amount of angles and the size of the cab. It's the largest cab I've done. It measures 1.5"x1.125"..which I know isn't huge, but still my biggest one...of the eight I've done! LOL Good thing about that is you can fix it by re-shaping the outside edge and make a smaller cab It's going to get added to the "need to fix this thing" pile that's getting bigger and bigger! LOL Oh sure...and I was just being impressed by it's size...and now it has to get smaller! LOL
