Good day,
I normally do not post my cabochon attempts, but most recently RTH member (@hookedonrocks ) created a post called "INSIDE SWOOP". For those of you who might have missed it, here is the link:
So with nothing to lose (besides some of my best material, and my patience) I have attempted to replicate the Inside Swoop.
Yesterday, here is the trio that I carved out as a tribute to Paul and his tutorial:
From left to right, Agatized Stromatolite, Mossy Lavic Jasper, and Henderson Amethystine.
I only have an 8" wheel, and consequently I don't think I nailed the inside swoop part of the project as I might have liked. Looks more like "Inside Straight" to me (which could be a good thing when in Vega$).
I should mention that none are polished yet. After these 3 I lost all patience and went back to butchering other rocks on the grinder. I will try again some time though.
Thanks for the teach, Paul!

Valiant attempt. I bet if you had 6 inch wheels, you could see the swoop a lot better. But, they look great as is and some pretty material, too.

+1 on the material and the attempt. I work with 6 inch and 8 inch wheels and right now only sanding on the 8 inch. I've found that pushing the wheel into the face increases the swoop and the swoop can be squared later. The cab on the left needs to be truncated so that the swoop meets the bottom.

Diggin’ the swoop style!! One more pointer.. Push light and slide the cab back and forth against the wheel, Also , turn the cab upside down to pronounce the swoop. Swoop must be completed PRIOR to any doming 😊😊😊😊😊😊✔️✔️✔️

Not sure why you lost patience. They look good. Really loving the amethystine.

I think they look pretty dang good for your first attempt. I little more playing around with the position of the cab on the wheel and you'll have it down.
Thanks for sharing your experience.

Bill, as others have stated, these are phenomenal first attempts! Seriously, thank you for posting these. I totally understand you getting frustrated with what you WANT to happen versus what is happening right now...but I think you're really close to getting this! You're going to have a little harder time getting the deep swoop you would if you were using the 6" wheel. So, just remember not to compare the swoop that you get with the 8" wheel versus what you've seen done on the 6" wheel... I'm jealous of the Stromatolite by the way! Love that stuff!

I appreciate the advice too. I didn't realize how far these were from ideal until I took the picture. It is kind of obvious now. Good thing they are not polished and I can still work on them. Thank you!

You know, the swoops were more pronounced before I started to dome it. I am sure of it because I did another couple stones (other attempts) again late last week. Which I will post now. After doming, I kind of took the swoops out.

I am disappointed about having to work on something that is polished. When something is complete but can be improved on it becomes a matter of it's worth the time.

Maybe I'll post in the Fossils forum some time now.
Yes, you are correct! I really could use a 6" wheel. Even though these don't come close to replicating Paul's work, I still believe the wheel size has a bunch to do with this.

But lately I have been noticing that my "freeforms" are getting a bit too "free". I see your stuff and note just how geometrically symmetrical they are, and how much more pleasing to the eye this is. It is harder work creating perfect symmetry I believe. And inspired by this thought I have dragged a dozen or so of my finished cabs back to the grinder to give them more of a geometric shape.
I always appreciate your comments when it comes to cabbing. Thank you!

I keep thinking I'm going to find some stromatolites one of these days! LOL In the meantime, I got a cheap one off eBay...I think it should be here today. I really do think a 6" wheel is the answer... Nice to see you posting again...been wondering about you for the last week or so. I hope your holidays were positive.

Ok folks! I think that I am not really getting the Inside Swoop results that I am "hoping" for. I appreciate the positive comments, and have returned to the grinder to make more attempts. Again, on my 8" wheel. Left to right we have (unknown junk rock my sister sent me, some mossy Lavic Jasper I picked up last week, and a dull example of Holt Canyon Jasper. I'll be throwing out the one on the left after seeing the cracks appear, and will keep working on the one in the middle (even with the vug that jumped in to the rock right in the middle of doming. But I think I threw a larger rock on the grinder just so I could find out if the swoop could be more pronounced with a larger rock. And, it sort of looks that way to me. Even though I am no where near close to producing a cab with the characteristics demonstrated by @hookenonrocks in his tutorial, I might be getting closer by creating larger cabs. I wonder if they have 6" wheels that fit on my 1" arbor? If so then I might make room at the very end of the grinder for a wheel that I could tack on to the end there. Maybe spraying water on it using a little guiyser sprikler or something. Hmm.. Thank you for your advice, all.

Looks like you are getting the hang of the swoop.
