Hey Tweetie, some of that looks pretty darn good. Most of it that I see for sale isn't worth wasting your time on. I think that you can do something really special with those. I find some amethyst locally but it is such low grade.
Ron
ps $0.25?

Xena, this comes from Thunder Bay, Canada. This is the stuff they get tourists to dig up, they also have a mine for $8/lb but it's for collectors! (Perfect crystals & such - this is for tumbling, (I'll see if I can) cabbing & other functions, once I finish fondling them (I can do that right?) Alice, you know me better than my husband does!

Nice looking ameythst tweet. Bring some to your rock club and grind some cabs. If you tumble it, use lots of pellets.

Congrats on the amethyst. It looks remarkably like some stuff I picked up at a local shop a few years ago, so quite possibly the local shop got theirs from Thunder Bay also. If it is the same as yours, then Stoner is bang on -- use lots of pellets because it loves to chip. I sometimes used pellets even in coarse grind. Absolutely in every stage beyond coarse. Takes a great polish in the end.

RS & Stoner: I was told that this stuff was a b"$#?H to crack: My friend said she'd whack it along a fault line & it wouldn't budge at all. She says she's never worked so hard to crack anything. I plan on trying to cab some once I get the hang of cabbing. Right now, I'm still lovingly washing & examining it!

Tweety, I live in WA state, and have no idea where Thunder Bay is...but that stone sure makes me want to find it! I hope you get lots and lots of nice looking stuff out of it! *EDIT* Just looked on a map...dang that place is on the other side of Canada from me Any good places in BC?

RollingStone: what happened to your post? I'm positive I saw pics of your amethyst I'm checking mine out and it looks pretty solid, maybe a few with some cracks inside, but mostly solid - I guess I'll see once it gets rounded up a bit, the cracks may be more apparent. I will use pellets anyways in 60/90 as I'd hate to waste any of this stuff. I've already put a few pieces aside for trying to cab them as they seem to have a nice beginning shape. Now I'm wishing I had much more - this a sickness, isn't it?

Nice score- Save some of the flatter stuff to cab and tumble the rest! It will fracture- I ran a small batch of crystals (years ago in a kiddie Tumbler) and it was great up to polish0 Then the stuff just fractured like mad! My son didn't care- he took it to school and gave it all away (mostly to the girls in class) That was the last batch I tumbled for may years (before the internet!)

Last piece of amethyst I ever saw in real life was a piece smaller than a pencil eraser - this just brings tears to my eyes - kinda like that virtual tour of eDogs of the gem shop. Who else but rockhounds cry at seeing pictures of rocks! I'm hoping to get some nice pieces. Like I said, I was told this was hard as hell to get into small chunks & dig out. They said they walked into this scene from a movie, where everywhere you look it's purple! Stone walls, ground, everywhere purple. Mesmerizing!
Did you use pellets Stefan? I guess not if you were using the kiddy tumbler as nothing really good comes with that tumbler... I'm gonna baby this batch!!

You can never have too much amethyst......LOL, I have a pretty good collection of it but have only tumbled a little bit of it. The batch I did tumble fractured and I used pellets. Maybe use lots of pellets with it and it won't fracture?
