I had received some tumbling rough from stephan awhile back, but hadn't gotten around to tumbling it...thank goodness! These five cabs were taken from that rough. I love this stuff! Thanks Stephan! I started these the other night, but several small pits showed up. So, I stopped after I got them shaped on the 180 grit grinding disk and applied some super glue gel into the pitted areas to "stabilize" and fill the pits. It worked. These are the first cabs I've done after I got a new 80 grit grinding disk and a 220 grit smoothing disk. Prior to this I was using a 180 grit for shaping and was applying way too much pressure to remove material "faster". I was then having to jump to 325 grit. Using the 80 grit for shaping, the 180 grit for fine shaping, then going to the 220 makes a world of difference! The whole process went a lot faster as the scratches were being removed incrementally. I'm really pleased with how these turned out. I am a lot happier with the new disks because of what they can do and what I can do with them! The first cab was a massive faux pas though. I had intended to cab the other side, but wasn't paying enough attention when I dopped it as well as when I started shaping it. By then, it was too late. The bottom edge had a lot of chips out of the edge, which is why I was going to use that as the dome side. On the second cab, you can see the pit that was filled in with super glue gel on the left side in the overhead picture. It's no longer a pit as the gel filled it in, but you can still see the blemish area. Thankfully, these are all still "practice" cabs! I figure I can consider all the cabs I make for the next couple years "practice cabs"! LOL Thanks for taking a gander and critiques are always welcomed.

Those are looking great, Jason! I still can’t believe how far you’ve come in such a short time. 👍

Those are great. The girdles are big but would be great for groove wrapping. Way to go, keep up the good work.

Nice work. And I’ve totally done the cab-the-wrong-side thing.
Unfortunately, Stone Canyon some will sometimes come apart, especially when dropped. Been there. 😭 3 & 4 are faves

Those are looking great, Jason! I still can’t believe how far you’ve come in such a short time. 👍 Thanks Brian! I'm happy with my progress so far...but still a long ways to go to get where I want to be...kind of like "life"! LOL - Doing these cabs, I felt more "comfortable" with knowing what each different grinding and smoothing disks do to the stone. It wasn't quite like the light bulb went on, more like I turned up the dimmer switch. LOL Yup, years of practice cabs...living the dream...Rocket Thanks Rocket! As long as I'm not selling them, they'll all be practice cabs! LOL Those are great. The girdles are big but would be great for groove wrapping. Way to go, keep up the good work. Thanks Diane! I agree, a couple of the girdles were a bit too big...but I've put on a few pounds since summer and thought a bigger girdle was necessary! (LOL - I don't think 5 pounds counts as a huge weight gain though!) Nice work. And I’ve totally done the cab-the-wrong-side thing. Unfortunately, Stone Canyon some will sometimes come apart, especially when dropped. Been there. 😭 3 & 4 are faves Thanks Stephan! I agree...number 3 was my favorite out of this batch! I've still got a few more pieces of what you sent, and a few more from some material Mel sent me. I was dissapointed with the wrong-side dopping error...more just mentally kicking myself for not paying attention. LOL - There's just something about the way this material looks and works that really appeals to me. Like you kinda said...it's like making scar tissue look pretty! (Wow! I'm a plastic surgeon for rocks...that's going on my résumé now! LOL)

Great job, those are looking good! Thank you so much! That first cab pictured was the first cab I've had come off the dopstick while working it. Thankfully it was on the 1200 stage, so I only had the 3000 and buffing to do by hand...I didn't want to take the time to re-dop it! LOL

I had one fly off the other night and decided to try to learn to do it without a Doo stick. Got a ways to go and need to regrow some fingernails... But I'm optimistic about it lol

Are those domed on the front and back? I like the thicker girdle.

But I'm optimistic about it lol Well, it's because you didn't "DOO" this right! LOL My fingernails are in the worst shape they've ever been in, due to "incidental" contact with the grinding wheel. LOL Are those domed on the front and back? I like the thicker girdle. No, they're totally flat on the back. I tried to "lift" them up on the felt by bending it up a little and placing the cab on the "hump" in the felt. I suppose that might make the backside look slightly domed. I swear they're flat! LOL I know that one has a really thick girdle, but I really do like the "beefy" look on this one.

Hiya' Jason. Those shapes and domes are looking good. I'd say better than mine in that same short length of time spent learning how to do it.
If you really want to annoy yourself on symmetrical shapes, draw an outline around one end and then flip the stone around to see how it fits the line. Or if you have thin translucent paper, you can draw an outline around the whole stone and fold it so one end of the outline is over the other. If it doesn't fit, pull out your lighter, burn the paper, and no one (else) will ever know... .

Thanks Vince! I've been noticing I'm not staying absolutely true to the symmetry...it's been bugging me. I'm having trouble keeping the stone 90 degrees to the disk when I'm shaping it. That causes me to have to correct the edge angle, which then changes the overall shape...thus losing symmetry. I literally laughed out loud on the lighter comment! LOL

So what is the future of these nice looking cabs? Necklaces? A display case? A box under your bed?

So what is the future of these nice looking cabs? Necklaces? A display case? A box under your bed? I have absolutely NO idea! LOL I've been wondering what the heck I'm going to start doing with these. They're really starting to add up. I suppose eventually, when I feel like they're "presentable" to someone else, I might consider looking into an Etsy account or something similar. Truly no definitive plans or expectations...I'm just having fun with it at the moment. I've only given one away...to my dad. He wanted a hat pin, and he said he really liked a Noreena Jasper shield I did. I really liked that one too (a LOT! LOL), so it was nice it went to him. When I gave it to him my mom said she wanted one that could be made into a necklace. I told her I really didn't want to get into wrapping, but I knew I could attach a glue on bail to make it ready for a chain. She liked that idea, so she's going to pick one of the ones I've done for that. So, at least I know I have a market within my family! LOL

It might be hard to spend time with all of them, but you can probably find women who are ok with that. In other words, just in it for the rocks.

Nope...I have one wife who would put ALL my "rocks" in a vise if that were to happen! LOL I'm sorry, if you are married disregard my advice. In that case, you would not want more than two girlfriends into your rocks. In my prior post I originally typed out "just in it for your rocks." I revised it to avoid the sexual innuendo, but since you have nevertheless gone in that direction...
