Pho-
Great idea. I can't wait to read thru the pages.
Did you say "28 scoops?" HOLY COW. How long are you thinking this will take from start to finish?

At least, starting with Pet. Wood, it should shape up pretty fast. Not like waiting for agate. Trish

Well....here I am changing the plugs..have to switch tires too as I am out of wood..had just enough wood left to cut plugs for a smaller tire so we are making the change now...12:00 CST. Hopefully now that I have a much better fit on the plugs it won't leak so bad....
Gaetz..I have no clue as to how long this will take...just have to play it by ear for now....

Damn I am so frustrated...those plugs are still leaking. I even put caulk around them. Gonna have to go back to the drawing board and work something up on that. Thinking some sore of rubber seal.....in the meantime..tumble on.....

Hey Pho - What if you sealed up one side permanently, and just used the other for access. That might cut the leak problem in half right away.
For the permanent side, how about a piece of rubber roofing (EDPM) glued to the sidewall like a bicycle patch.
On the door side, maybe about a dozen 1/4-20 stainless bolts sticking out, slip the plywood or plexi over the studs and snug up all the nuts. If you drill holes smaller than 1/4" in the side of the tire, and force the 1/4-20's through from the inside, they should be held snug and not fall out. Something for a gasket would help too. Could even do this on both sides.
And then some baby moon hubcaps to really dress it up.

Par...ya got a good idea there..something I had not thought about. Will look into doing that. Sealing one side permanate would be ideal. Thanks for the input..

Baby moons on a tumbler, now that would be classy.

How about cutting some rubber (like from a heavy inner tube) and sticking it onto the plywood, lining it entirely? Sort of like what the 15 lb thumblers have on the lids. The rubber on rubber might form the tight seal your looking for and keep the plywood from swelling and eventually disintegrating when it gets wet.

That is a wonderful idea. That is quite a tumbler you have there. Tami

I think a rubber liner is in order- Try a little Murphy's oil soap on the bead- it usually seal things up pretty good!

ok...the plugs leaked like they were being paid to so I replaced them with a new plug cut out of a 2X12 at a 30 degree angle. I had to use two tubes of roofing tar to get it to seal right but I think it is gonna work. Will know in a little while.

Hey Pho - I shudder to think of the mess you might have on your hands, or anything else, from that roofing tar.
Here's a crazy idea. Find a beachball or basketball or something thats a good fit inside the tire and blow it up tight, so you end up with a ball inside a donut.
Alternate barrel - Home Depot or local lumberyard probably sells a plastic drum with a screw on lid that's used to mix one bag of cement or concrete with water. You put the cement and water in and roll it around to mix it. Might even have vanes in it to help the mix, or tumble.

Yeah..that tar is no fun to work with for sure. I am thinking about getting a golf cart rim and put it in there. Those can be changed with only a couple of screwdrivers so that would not be a problem. I don't think a beach ball or something like that would work because the rocks tumble and would hit it and possible put a hole in it but the thought was good.
I am always lookinng at different ideas for this thing. One never knows what will work until they try...

Pho, you are probably already aware of this link, but just in case not, I'll post it. It consists of a 19 page pdf document on how to build and operate a 50 lb truck-tire tumbler, plus a shorter document on design modifications to the "door" of the tumbler made 4 years after his original design. The pdf document includes a section discussing the leakage issue and how to deal with it. www.acc.umu.se/~widmark/lwtrumld.html
