aloha,
I just bought an old highland park 16" saw with a 14" blade and searched out that thread. So I joined to post about the saw, which I intend to set up today. The hood is rusty, and so is the shrouding, but the solid steel plates haven't rusted, and the motor and takeoff work fine, all of it works fine. I originally offered the guy $150 but upped it to $200 when I saw it was a sound old hp. The comparison with my less old lortone 12" is like a honda to a tank.
I also recently acquired a lortone 20" vibrating flat lap, bought some grits, replaced the springs with some I got at the hardware store, and am fixing to use my new vibrator today, I'm excited. Never done it before. I have lots of geodes, ran into a collection of 1000 going for a song.
I'm terry, possibly the only person slabbing and cutting cabs on the big island of hawaii. Any others out there, let me know, we can trade rocks.
I make and sell silver jewelry at farmer's markets, and do pretty well as there is a lot of new interest in crafting. The markets here barely noticed covid and now pent up demand from tourists is booming even in the slack season.
I grind cabs with a gem genie, using cerium oxide on a flat lap at the end. Can't get a good poish on jade (?). I do batches of forty or so at a time. I buy rock from mainland rock shops (need some more larimar rough) but lately people have been offering me rock from uncles and grandpas and old estates, stuff no one wants or can even value, but it isn't lava so no one throws it away. Some nice old picture jaspers, one or two I can't identify but are stunning. I need a forum to help me identify the material in some of my cabs, as everyone wants to know if this stone will help their love life, or cure cancer, or something.
Yes, we have no native rocks in hawaii, and pele is jealous of the ones we do have. While we have no actual minerals, you can swim at white, black, grey, red and green sand beaches.
aloha, terry

You came to the right place. We offer opinions and ideas, and encouragement, and leads on where to find the info we don't have. I was once on a tourist trip in Galapagos with an eminent, but retired geologist and someone inquired as to whether he was happy to be in an archipelago with so many rocks. His response was like yours. Its all lava. Welcome. At least if you ask us to identify rocks you've collected locally, we are pretty safe on our answers. I just collected some nice specimens of pahoehoe from a relatively recent lava flow in New Mexico (3,000 years or so) and enjoy the stuff even though its not suitable for lapidary work. Its hanging on my front fence as to my affinity for lava.

Its hanging on my front fence as to my affinity for lava. I have stuck sticks into a pahoehoe flow and dug out fresh made donuts. Nowadays the powers that be only let their buddies play with the lava, but back in the nineties there were flows so widespresad they would give up and just tell us to carry water, flashlights and tough shoes. I once collected some lava at crater lake that floated. terry

I have some opal rough I bought 25 years ago from australiia. I took some relatively low grade lambina mine australian opal that I had a big piece of and cut it and set it in a heavy silver double half round wire bracelet. Couldn't figure out how to price it and so took it down to big island jewelers for appraisal. It was big, 67 carats; he said $6k or wholesale 1 to 1.5k. He liked the setting but thought it should have been set in gold. I sold it to a boeing engineer from seattle on hs honeymoon for $1800. I'm afraid to cut the little ones with the red fire because I always cut the matrix off to make a prettier cab and I'm slicing off potentially thousands doing that. When I get to cutting them I'll start a thread in the appropriate place. terry

Howdy from western Oregon! I used to do the annual salem show back in the day. Willamette valley weather is why we moved to hawaii. Also went to school at osu and u of o, and my wife graduated from then oce. Used to bake willametter river agates in the oven at 400 degs for a half hour, then cut and set them as carnelians, had a nice red color and were easy to collect. terry

Welcome from Virginia Beach. We have plenty of sand, too, but no good rocks. Not even lava. Looking forward to seeing what you've got.

RTH is hosted on the proboards platform. Image hosting here has always been a huge problem, but Cloudinary has solved that as it works nicely with proboards. Just follow this tutorial exactly forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/page/using-cloudinary and you can drag and drop. If you are using your phone- download the tapatalk app and you can upload with that.
