I live somewhere that gets very cold and snowy during the winter time and was wondering how you guys get through it. I can't use outdoor water to wash the rocks so I was imagining filling up a bucket inside and bringing it out. I don't have a huge tumbler yet (dual 3 lb) so I won't have a tone of trouble with a bucket. If anyone has a good setup, please share. Anything will help out.

We do our tumbling in the basement. I cut in a line years ago on the hot water to have a hose spigot to clean litter boxes, etc., has come in real handy for this hobby. We run two 15lb. and two 6lb. barrels plus a couple of vibes all of the time and sometimes add a couple of 3’s and a 2 pounder. All clean outs happen downstairs in the basement in a dedicated utility sink that drains into five gallon buckets. From there it is the bucket brigade, except there is only two of us. It’s a good workout! Trying to build up my son so he can carry two full five gallon buckets at a time. Should be much easier with your three pounders, and a lot less work. Five gallon bucket, colander, maybe a small bucket to pour the water over the rocks. There is a good chunk of the year where we cannot even consider doing an outdoor clean out due to the temperature.

I use a mesh strainer or sifting pan over a standard 5 gallon bucket in the bath tub (with detachable shower head). I am carful to not get any slurry in the tub. I dump the bucket outside.

I just shut down my tumblers for about 2 to 3 months, clean up is just to much of a hassle in freezing weather.

How many buckets does it take to make a Bucket Brigade We usually keep it to four buckets dedicated to the tumblers. A fifth takes care of the drains from our tile saw containment and grinder, second picture in this thread: forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/thread/94930/1-using-tile-indoorsNot sure two people can be called a brigade but we get the job done. Can be a lot of work at times so during coarse we try to just rinse the rocks off good enough to sort through- ready for next stage, needs more tumbling, go to the saw, etc. After that though we are very thorough and the buckets fill up fast.

Thank you! How do you get rid of your slurry during winter? We dump it in the same spot we always use- behind our garage which is out of sight. Sometimes we use borax which kills the grass, other times we use sugar which attracts ants, etc. Don’t want either of these right by the house.
