Looks like an old fashioned sledge hammer could do the job. Can't see any of the other sides but any cracks that a chisel can fit into would be the way to start. Looking at the top of this photo I think that is a crack you can work on. Should be able to take that whole top off for starters.

your right Rick !
I was watching rock splitting you tube using those feather wedges
but I like the cold chisel idea
actually broke a lot of those rocks today with my crow bar and just dropping them
they are pretty weathered and the insides seem to be a caliche not so great
this one seem pretty solid hopefully in couple days I'll be hammering on it...

Went out and cold chisels on my hunk of chrys Of course I forgot my safety Buute it was just an exploratory tinkering My cold chisel width is just 1” Need a 2 1/2” to be more effective Cheap skate that I am & being that this is all experimental Not willing to pay 9 dollars at Harbor Freight I’ll look in pawn shops ect Nonetheless Can tell the hunk is rock solid Solid with what -is the question Nothing like breaking rocks Good work-- if ya can get it ...

mohs I have more chisels than I need, and old jackhammer bits too, you can have one. Wider just spreads out the force of the hammer more, targeting a line of impact spots where it looks to be crackable usually works better. If you have a crack, a truck or trailer leaf spring piece ground to almost a point on the end is perfect for popping a fault. I just found an interesting wedge at a sale, after I figure out if the steel is hard enough it might get ground into another "hard rock" tool.

Good info Lee! Not sure what I'm doing besides trying to split a big rock Its pleasant. Sit out at the bottom of the Salt River & tinker on big chrys. Just like the Hohokam did! Things come around I also found the little waterfall & green zone back there These really big orange dragons were fluttering around They didn’t want to cooperate for a photo Buute they won’t elude me for long

Broken piece of the RiverView Chrys Lousy photo This is not the Crys chunk I’m tinkering on I broke this piece w/my crow bar probably lots of fractures in the rock not much bling Buute I am encouraged to polish a piece thought the matrix was rhyolite Closer inspection some sort of quartzy feldy magmamistic fine grained mineralistic matter surprising how many different types of matrix material, w/all the copper derivative coloring, is in that excavated pile

Gneiss morning stroll Succeeded in chippy the chrys Solid-- yet unfortunately not ooh & ahh quality Picture not great picure for what I'm trying to show the matrix good size crystals in fine grain powdery grayish white Thought the crystal were quartz Butte quick scratch test Seem like high carbon steel scrapes it/ Could be a feldspar? What ever it is-- its pretty darn hard Thanks for looking …

Congrats on getting a piece off. It looks pretty. I wonder if there is more turquoise color at the other end.

Good question fernwood Beth There is turquoise shading in that area Yet it seems like everything -so far -is just a surface coating. The oxides didn’t penetrate the matrix deeply and meta crystallized darn These rocks were excavated. I suppose the excavators had done assay work on the quality of these rocks How the copper oxide bubbled and seeped over so large an area, with so many types of host rocks; is boggling I’ll keep searching for the gem interesting geology Nonetheless...

On my hike I crow/cracked a deep lifted olivine seam Think it mostly deep olivine With a fair amount of silicon, horne and/or biotite blend More importantly perhaps It motivated me to spin up the Lortone So I just did some rough window'n grind Obviously not fine lapidary material Butte Mohs likes it !
