Did some more grinding on my everyday average crow cracked olivine find At least I think it mostly olivine w/ lots of horneblende silica ect,,, Whatever it is -came form deep in the earth as I crow bar cracked it from seam in the granite piedmont Best so far all i can get is countertop finish That radius slope is about 3” x 2" Hard & slick

That's a pretty rock, good color and will make some nice hearts. Looks a lot like epidote that we find in the NC mountains that's associated with granite.

Does it form near the same or a much later time? It's a really neat piece.

This probably came out of a rock quarry. I found it in some riprap in the mountains of NC. I have the only one that I know of. As an agate hunter in KY I knew what to look for. This "pot belly" looking rock had the void it needed to fill. The void came from gasses when the original matrix was cooling down, leaving a place to "chill-out" for the hot-pressurized-epidote-solution.

It's a hydrothermal metamorphic process where hot water is boiling up like Yellowstone Park geysers. A calcium solution shellacs the crevices that the water and steam pass through. The hot liquid cools off as it crystallizes -- leaving a pea-soup colored residue. We call it epidote. It's a pistachio earthy kind of color.

Right on thanks all for the interesting info the green may very well not be olivine could very well be an epidote vine interesting blurb I saw online olivine doesn't associate well with quartz and the seam was quartzy

This as turned out be quite the study and I can't pretend to explain it even tho after all these posts my moniker is can identify rocks- even green ones ha Butte I always naively assumed most Green rocks were olivine based Wrong Actually a very few percentage are -if any I guess These clasts in the Papago Buttes Must be some combination of epidot, chlorites ectal What is commonly referred to as greenstone Because there so convoluted meta morphed Please keep adding your geologically informed insights...

Bummer. But, at least you still have it and it didn't go flying.
Happy Thanksgiving to you, Ed.

Admittedly this is not a very good picture of another unique find in Papago Its shaded Get a better shot, when the sun is setting Should light up better Its large chuck of black lava scoria Those vesicles are glassy melt & obsidian sharp Apparently someone defaced it what I think is paint Although I’m not sure Plan on bringing over some acetone & brush and see if I can’t clean some of it If it is latex paint Any have suggestion of best cleaning method? Thanks ED

Acetone will do it. But, it would take a lot. Maybe turpentine or mineral spirits?

thank miket ! you find any lava type rocks in your travels? Not really around here, my friend... Right on Mike How about seashells? Over in Papago I’ve found many tiny white bi-valves shells Sea-shells in the desert. Seem strange. Today I was doing some digging in soft soil spot in that park. That hard to find in that area. Its acres & acres of granitic rocky clastic piedmont. Drive a couple miles away & all you’ll find --for miles & miles & miles & miles ect.... -I’m talking whole humongous valley basin- is nothing butte deep soil/dirt filled land Hardly a rock to be found All that said: in my dig I found a different type of shell. besides just the tiny white bivalves Little white nautilus type shells like ammonite shape- but modern- I suppose have to get a picture Anyway just wondering if you find sea shells in your area? My idea looking your basin pictures is that land raised from some ancient sea.
