mohs , just a thought, but it being scoria, how about trying to burn the paint off. I don't think a little fire would mess up an igneous rock.

Not really around here, my friend... Right on Mike How about seashells? Over in Papago I’ve found many tiny white bi-valves shells Sea-shells in the desert. Seem strange. Today I was doing some digging in soft soil spot in that park. That hard to find in that area. Its acres & acres of granitic rocky clastic piedmont. Drive a couple miles away & all you’ll find --for miles & miles & miles & miles ect.... -I’m talking whole humongous valley basin- is nothing butte deep soil/dirt filled land Hardly a rock to be found All that said: in my dig I found a different type of shell. besides just the tiny white bivalves Little white nautilus type shells like ammonite shape- but modern- I suppose have to get a picture Anyway just wondering if you find sea shells in your area? My idea looking your basin pictures is that land raised from some ancient sea. Oh yes, lots of fossil shells, coral, etc. Even Ammonites around here. We were definitely under water. There were even sharks if you can believe that.
Here's a few links to read if you have time...sorry one is Wikipedia!

Yes it is Mike
It seems like I have a curse of thinking to much About all the imponderables
That why I got interested in geology Somewhat solid
Although
Heraclitus stated -ya can't roll the same rock twice
Parmendies replied- there only one rock and it doesn’t roll at all
MohsKnohs - the ancients knew their Rock !

Well I’ll be Snookered...mostly Saw a butte in Papago I hadn’t hiked/ Figured I better get up that hill See the view - for set & rise Ascending started noticing lots of milky white quartz shards about Strange in the Papago’s Then I there must be a pod about I got that idea from a recent video’s Low&behold I found it A epidite ‘n quartz pod! Massive! Broke out a plate w/ my trusty crow digged on the Papagohs quartz pod The geology can be deceptive The quartz cap is shallow At least where i easily crowed out chunks Just couple inches down -- then it red bedrock would have imagine quartz pod would be massive U deep Unless the top surface is all that left from weathering? That would be remarkable Buute something up-- I nocapesh

Hi Guys Az Mining & Mineral Museum Once a year gives a demonstration of their stamp mill operation. Here is the long view of the mucker This mucking machine would be underground Its purpose is to scoop up ore and dump it into a railed cart That cart would then haul the partially crunched ore up out of the mine to be delivered to the stamp mill.

They had a machine under ground that would partially crush the ore. Then the super duper scooper mooocker would scooped up the ore, & dump it into a railed cart to be transported out of the mine Guess I just repeated my self…. O well... I keep doing things (rofl)ver & o ...

The ore would be dumped into controlled holder bin & methodically measured dumped into the mills case to be pulverized. This particular stamp mill is a 5 hammer as been around a long long time. Been well maintained This is the gold in hand ha The machine was surprisingly quiet in operation. I forgot to ask if that was case 100 years ago out at hard break mine, Saw lot of underground rocks !!

Hey guys This a gold slurry spiral concentrator disc used at the mill. After the mill as pulverized the ore a good portion of fine grain slurry is Is poured into the spinning disc. The mesmerizing spiral spin sifts & transporting the gold to the center of the disc. This gold slurry pours through The center hole into a container which then makes for easy panning. at a minimum its 28 inches across heavy ! made in Mexico

I dig quartz Started a quartz cairn at a base of a mighty saguaro. Really fine bright quartz The dirt road is just off U.S. 60. Opposite side from Picket Post Mountain The dirt road forks to either route 367 and 8 I took route 8 just over the railroad tracks. Sure some here have traveled it Can Anyone tell me where and how far route 8 goes? I’m thinking its the old Apache Trail & leads to the once used tunnel and bridge. If your ever in the area place a stone for 'the mohs'

Hi fernwood Beth Sunday at Pueblo Grande Museum the annual open air Indian Craft Festival took place. Quite a large event with lots of craftspeople displaying their crafts & fair amount in attendance As you can imagine turquoise and silver were prominently displayed. & thought you’d enjoy this I had fairly long chat with the Navajo weaver, Emily Always been fascinated with these demonstrations...

Heya, thanks for the welcome!
I went to grad school at ASU so I lived in Tempe and Phoenix. But I would drive all over going to parks, ghost towns, hiking etc. Picked up not a one rock! I have not been to Show Low. I would love to own land somewhere though. That must have been nice.
I do miss the wide open spaces there. Not the highway system in Phoenix though, that was designed by architects on LSD.
