That's a great shot! It brings back memories. I did enjoy my time there, I was getting a doctorate in evolutionary anthropology, they have a nice program there and I agree it is a lovely campus. First I lived right on University Ave, then on Van Buren. Then afterwards I moved back home to Missouri. I climbed a few mountains while I was there, though I wish I had done it more, but .. school etc etc. I made it to Flagstaff a few times and Sedona, the Grand Canyon of course, and a few ghost towns (Bumblebee, Jerome). I miss having mountains and cacti just around as part of the scenery, although here we have plenty of forests and rivers. Actually I may try to go canoeing tomorrow. Gotta look for those rocks!! The kids are well thanks for asking. They're getting their own rock tumbler for Xmas.

That will be long lasting memory And Mom will dig it too ! thrilled that you enjoyed you ASU Zona experience That quite study ! Did you ever visit the Pueblo Grande Museum? As you know I’m big on the Hohokam history Anyway its to easy for me to get to far afield I go on & on & on …. Butte here’s a picture of some mostly Maricopa rocks Just ordinary stones that I found geologically interesting The bigger red sandstone is rounded and naturally tumbled smooth Prtty neat I’m Especially thrilled with the middle little round wine colored gem I found it on my Florence tour It stood out That it was tumbled so naturally-- round smooth poished Who know how big it started out eon’s ago ? It either a quartzite or a first born quartz Must of tumbled in river of vino I got more ha So stay tuned….

mohsYes I have been to that museum! Wasn't that where the exhibit on Native American boarding schools was/is? That was powerful. They are getting rocks to go with the tumbler for sure although my eBay habit will surely keep them supplied indefinitely. Thanks for showing me your AZ rocks. I actually went today to a place called Haunted Ridge where we dug Missouri lace agate. My gosh the stuff was everywhere but we got two 5 gallon buckets full and two huge rocks that are 50-100 lbs each. I've never seen so much agate. And only like 1.5 hours away from me I had no idea. Now I know where to go for all my landscaping rock needs. I will post some pictures later. I am going to try to figure out how to embed Imgur links so the photos just show up in with the text. One of the 5 gallon buckets is in iron out now.

Not sure Cade You may be thinking of the Heard Museum? Pretty renown for its anthropology display I would think. Pueblo Grande is on Washington. The 143 highway runs right beside it. Just stone throw for me on the Buren street ha ha Its an open air museum... mostly. It was the main encampment of the Hohokam, It features their platform mound and ball court. Sits right on the Salt River where they dug the head gates, and canals to irrigate the massive valley. Heres a picture from Pueblo Grande on Sunday. They had the Indian Craft fair. I tried to include the side of the platform mound. It may have been 15 feet tall at one time. About a half a football size in length Of course CamelBack Mountain off on the north end Move that building! What a view those Hohokam had! I think it great that you found a spot to hunt and gather stones. Plus that canoe row sounds good. It jumped off the page at me. Because I planning on renting a kayak and rowing Tempe Lake. Never done that before Hang around RTH and you'll probably get an avalanche of rock to roll save money to boot.

mohsYes you must be right it was the Heard Museum I was thinking of. I have not lived there for nearly 10 years so I'm sure many details are forgotten. I did go to one open air museum that had ancestral rock paintings outside. If you ever come through here you should go to Cahokia mounds. Great Native American historical site. You can climb the largest one, great view from there. I never did row on Tempe Town Lake. Let me know how that goes. Usually we don't get to canoe in December but it has been in the 70s. Strange weather we have been having here. All those tornadoes last week and has not yet been below freezing. Global warming in action.

Yep these weather patterns have been changing from many decades of what seemed to be a normal baseline cadefoster117 Unfortunately not for the better as far as human habitation is concerned All we can say is: be as stay safe as can be Cahokia mounds are definitely on my butte list ! Another missed opportunity, as I was fairly ignorant, of that those sort of things when I lived in that part of the country as promised ha here my Papago blue find as I explore that area w/ a more critical eye unique geology pops up the bluish quartz crystals just bullied their way into the porous weathered granite...

I was thrilled yesterday to find that Christmas Tree out in the big rock field, So thrilled I went right back w/ bailing wire & wrapped a couple rocks as ornaments Slap the rock on! Only did the 3 and put minimal effort into the hounding & wrapping. Did go for Christmas color coordination tho Red, green, and really nice white rounded quartz There is an encampment out in that field. I figured it was theirs. Went back to today and tree is gone! Did someone steal it ? Was it only a temporary storage? Anyway it is gone w/ the rock ornaments ! They weren’t left behind…

Several possibilities:
1. A happy family has it 2. A hippy (encampment) family has it 3. A Grinch got it

Hi, mohs! I've been keeping distracted lately, but I still lurk about more than you knohs, lol. I've told y'all about the off road area where we go for rock picking out at Ocotillo Wells, right? OWSRVA. Well, they've done a lot of "improvements" and upgrades since the 80s when they started getting some of the green sticker fees from the state. They have improved some of the trails that the regular people riding there started a long time ago. They made some maps of the area and the trails, they are available for free at the ranger station. To make a map useful to people, the streets have to be named. There is one trail near where we camp at named Commune Road. Story is, there actually was an honest-to-God commune there back in the day! MAP

Oh yeah, and gneiss job on the rock ornaments, Mr mohs ! mrrockpicker has not taken a header again, but he is never far from doing it again. He has no muscle tone in his legs, no balance, and no strength in his back. But I think he learned his lesson and won't do a faceplant for the same reason as last time. He does have a slight divot in the center of his forehead, where the skin split/smashed a little when it met the concrete. Other than that, really no damage on the outside, no goose egg or bruise left. Can't say what it looks like on the inside, since he refused to go to the ER. SMH...
