This is art...for some reason I thought of one of the scenes from the Alchemist when he's out looking over the sand dunes. Awesome work!

This is art...for some reason I thought of one of the scenes from the Alchemist when he's out looking over the sand dunes. Awesome work! Thank you so much! As soon as I saw the slab, I saw clouds rolling in over the sand dunes...and knew I wanted to capture that somehow...and since I don't do freeforms, I figured this shape worked! LOL

Here's my entry this round. I'm no ID expert but thinking Owyhee. Got it in a mix box from roy several months ago. Was this an intentional play on words? Beautiful cab! I'm thinking it's either Cripple Creek or Wild Horse...I believe both are "Owyhee" jaspers...

jasoninsd Lol it crossed my mind when I wrote it. My rock shop is a little light on details so I just wanted to get in the right region!

NDK - Nice "recovery"! That first one did look like it was going to be a killer! Didn't one break on you a couple months ago too...or was that someone else? agatewhisperer - Not only did you get the right region...you got the right material as well! I was getting ready to submit a Montana Moss Agate before I realized "jasper" was the other part of the entry requirements! LOL

Jason I believe I have dropped 3 cabs meant for the contest. At least this one wasn't done yet 🤣

Solid field of beautiful stones yet again, thanks everyone! Nine beautiful entries is once again a very good contest so thank you to brotherbill for making us think, and a few of us myself included do a face palm or two. I had planned on entering but time just got away from me yet again. I'll blame it on being worked to death again - yeah that will be an entirely original excuse Anyway, I did have one cut but it never made it to the soft wheels and my efforts died a slow death.

Another group of GREAT looking cabs from EVERYONE! There really are some amazing materials and gorgeous cabs in this month's entries! A lot of times it's pretty hard for me to pick a winner...but if I'm being totally upfront and honest, this month there was one particular one that really stands out to me...and it's not mine dangit! LOL Truly, a great job from everyone!

I have narrowed it down to 5. Thankfully, there is lots of time left to vote.

Is this a vote on workmanship, material quality, or the whole package?

Is this a vote on workmanship, material quality, or the whole package? Voting Criteria: Please judge each entry based on the following. 1) How well was the challenge of the contest theme met? 2) How well did the stone meet the contest requirements of a flat back, domed top cabochon? 3) General appearance - keeping in mind that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and many materials are difficult to work with and an exceptional creation might not be flashy and bright. 4) Photography - is there a direct and focused front shot, and a direct and focused side shot showing girdle and dome for voting purposes? If a tie vote occurs, a new voting poll will be launched for the period of one day and will include only the stones that were tied for the lead.
Tommy maybe it would be a good idea to include the voting criteria on the voting page?

Is this a vote on workmanship, material quality, or the whole package? Yes. Seriously though the voting criteria is posted but it's up to each person to pick the one they like the best pertaining to workmanship which to some degree includes material quality - ie: we choose which piece of material we will use as part of the quality cabochon making process (edited to add: which also involves the skill of capturing scenes and features in the rock). Regarding the whole package I personally before voting try to envision each cabochon being made into jewelry which really has me take a hard look at the overall shape and girdle angles etc.

As a side note - I've taken a number of steps to reduce tendency for the contest to degrade into a "popularity contest" or even more likely a "photo contest." There is no way to completely eliminate these possibilities but I'm always open to ideas.
You all may have noticed that in the voting collage, each individual rock photo has increased in size to hopefully create a more fair and balanced visual. Each main stone thumbnail is now in the neighborhood of 300 x 300px, and the side view thumbnail is around 300 x 100px. This suggestion came to me from a member and I think it made an immediate impact on leveling the playing field.

Tommy maybe it would be a good idea to include the voting criteria on the voting page? Good idea Robin - it does kind of get buried below the photos and links in the long post. At the very least I should be able to move it up the page so it is prominently displayed at the point of looking at the collage.
